frag tank suggestions needed
« on: August 25, 2010, 17:03:47 »
Well after about a year of waiting I have come into 5 sheets of 1/2in acrylic and am planning on building smaller frag tanks with it.  What size of tank do you think most people might like to have if they were in the market for a frag setup?  Once I get tooled up I will be making these so if you might  be interested keep an eye out for any post once I get started.
thanks
Jeff

In that case, lots, and I mean LOTS of live rock in a huge sump/fuge.

That would probably work.

I don't think most people understand how important live rock is to corals. A well established system has lots of planktonic creatures that feed corals. Plus bacteria etc...

Look at frag tanks run with frags, DSB, and a skimmer. Then look at systems run like a reef. You will see what I mean :)

Keep one thing in mind about a frag tank that's plumbed into your main system. If your display crashes guess what, there goes your frags.

You should make a bunch of these! Ive got one! 36x36x12

1/2" is a bit overkill for frag tanks, did you "run into" these sheets or buy em all?

I think a good size that makes the most of the acrylic is a 48x24x16, however a 36x36x12 has an extra square foot of footprint area, and can be lit well by a single 400w bulb, and its shallow for good light penetration.... pretty much the most perfect thing you can make out of a sheet of acrylic.

Exactly! Thats why I don't run things "to the limit". Remember "K.I.S.S" hehe. But if plumbed right, you can isolate the frag tanks from the main system if you can catch a problem before its too far gone.

Thats true. Play with the numbers a bit. His 36X36 tank has more square inches. But a 48X24 tank with a single 400 on a light mover will provide better lighting in theory. Although, you could put lower light corals toward the outside. It depends on what you intend to keep! I will agree that the 3X3 square is pretty slick :)

A light mover on a 48x24x16 would be slick!

We had the sheets at my work over the front glass on our office building.  The co. exec. was afraid of being shot at is why it is 1/2in.  It is a bit scuffed and a few scratches but for a frag tank I thought that it would be great.  One thing with the sheets being 1/2 in I dont think I would need to eurobrace it.

I work at greater dayton RTA.  the offices up front are right off rt.35 and there was  a shot fired at the glass years ago.  Thus our director had the glass installed being over paranoid.  I will do some measuring and see how many 3 ft tanks I could get out of what I have.
thanks

You would be surprised. Your average hand gun @ a decent range (stray fire) will be stopped by .5" acrylic. At the very least slowed/fragmented enough to minimize damage.

Now a 5.56 or similar high energy round is a bit different. But I don't see many gangbangers packing AR-15's lol.

I would try and find out if its actual acrylic and not lexan. Lexan is more of a "bullet proof" glass. I am not sure if lexan will glue the same as acrylic. Different types of plastic's glue different. I have a smoked acrylic piece here that cracks when you put weldon 3 or 4 on it. Try a few small test pieces and make sure it doesn't crack or melt when you put the glue to it.

No, they prefer .50 AE :)

Electrical Engineers do it on impulse, with faster rise times, with more power, and less resistance at higher frequencies, without shorts, until it Hertz

Can you see the difference between lexan and acrylic?  I am not sure which it might be.
