Title: Salt question, No bashing just looking for feedback
Post by: Baggerhog on September 17, 2009, 15:41:08
Joel is having a power buy on Kent Marine salt. It looks to be a good deal, but I have no experience with it. If anyone using or has used it could give me some feedback I would appreciate it. I am not to worried about calcium as I have a huge calcium reactor that keeps my calcium levels up just fine. I would like some info and I cant seem to find a thread anywhere on the forum that talks about this salt. I thought someone did a study on different salts but I cant find it.

The study is in one of the Cyano threads. I like it disolves better than the other salts I have used.

What are you useing now?

I switched over to Kent at the recommendation of Justin from aquatic specialists and its mixes great! you get more gallons out of the bag then what it says! My chemical levels have really reacted and are excellent now! I will never switch to a different salt!

I did like it better than seachem and IO but i dont dose anything other than kalk through my top off. I will probably get a few buckets.

I am using RSCP and have been for a year or so. I have a giant GEO calcium reactor and I top off with straight RO/DI water no kalk. I was wondering how its tests for mag/cal/alk/PH.

Andy,

I have used Kent marine & Instant Ocean brand salt more than any other brands.  Honestly what determines which one I use is who has the better price. My experience is that they are almost identical in terms of their good & bad points.

Really the only low point about either is that they both need higher ca, Alk & mag than what is typically desired for reef aquariums. All of these are easily overcome with proper supplementation. (as you have the means to achieve)

Although not specific to just Kent Marine, this is a pretty good  report / comparison on synthetic salts (including kent);

It pointed out that none are identical to natural water but rate kent & I/O pretty highly

Quote from review;

No salt in this study is an accurate simulation of natural sea water. All salts had at least one toxic heavy metal that was far in excess of NSW levels. When all factors are considered, Tropic Marin, Instant Ocean, and Kent Marine score the best, but such a score can not be arrived at without some amount of subjective judgment in evaluating the pertinent factors.

For me, I would feel very safe using Kent Marine, rarely have I had problems with it. The only reason I use I/O more frequently is because I typically get it at a lower price.
