&$-/$ing vortech's
« on: January 07, 2013, 21:06:17 »
Ugh...... Love the pumps, (I have two mp60's) however they suck fish in

Just lost a maroon clown today.  A few weeks ago my blonde naso got sucked onto the pump and he lived for a few days then died

Lost a lawnmower bleenny a few months back that got sucked onto it

Vortech sells sponge filters that cover the intake on the pumps but they clog up in a few days.

Thinking of selling the vortechs but not sure what to do to get me the flow I need.  I should of just done a closed loop

You might try & make a cage around d the back of the ph using egg crate. You could cut & glue it. Or you could heat it up just to a molding point & mold it arou d something the same diameter as the mp60. Then just cut the length you need. This might keep things out of the most dangerous suck zone. Just an idea.

I was thinking of doing the same, somehow make a big box to cover up the pumps, they move a LOT of water.

It would be very difficult for me to do a closed loop in the tank :(

Pumps are probably going on 2 years old.  Going to try some kind of cage before I sell them.

Maybe gutter guard instead of egg crate? Or the stuff folks use to make mesh-wheel pump impellers?

Well, I was thinking something like this.. http://compare.ebay.com/like/350509031518?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar

or this- http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202518614/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=gutter+guard&storeId=10051

(More flexible, enough surface area to break suction, but not enough surface area to immediately get clogged up..)

Go with tunze pumps! I sold my vortecs and went with two Tunze 6105 and couldn't be happier. No more noise either.

There is a little noise since the motors are on the outside of the tank...    They can be heard, But I wouldn't call it noisy.
