lighting for fuge/sump
« on: November 18, 2007, 17:11:00 »
I am planning to put together a 55 gallon sump with a section with cheato, live rock rubble and a sand bed.  What would be the best lighting choice for this application?
Thanks
Jeff

I've had good luck with the Flood Lights like these. You can find them cheap if you shop ebay and such.

I use the daylight spectrum compact flourescents from Wal-Mart. They have worked very well for my refuge.

I am using P.C. on smaller sumps like that, dual 65 watt or 96 watt with kelvin temp of 55-67 has worked out very well for me. The lower priced "retro fit" type are nice and will save you a few bucks.

Same here.  I have 2 of them over my fuge with great results.  They are very cost effective too!   :)

Ok, I went the ghetto cheapy route...and it's worked out great for me.  I have tons of coraline in my sump.

1 house lamp socket on a wire clamp (in the extension cord section in Lowes/Home Depot)

1 flood light with the flourescent spiral tube light inside (lighting section)

Total cost...about $15...and it clips on anything you want to mount it to.  It's great.  :)

I can't get rid of my macro fast enough...definitely plenty of light for it!

Thanks for all of the replies.  I will follow the cheap route and pick up a couple of daylight compacts.
Thanks again
Jeff

I'd get them in a floodlight so you don't have to worry about moisture/salt corrosion issues.  They're not much more expensive, if any, and they fit a standard house socket.  JMO.
