Frag Swap Season
« on: September 04, 2012, 03:15:03 »
I see lots of items on fragswapper from CORA swap with bryopsis algae. Especially those that are selling zoas. Be careful, this is not something you want to get in your tank. It is a really bad pest.

Here is what to look for

+10000000      I picked this up the last swap season, and had a hell of a battle with it.  I ended up up throwing our 1/2 the frags I had in my frag tank.  Good news is I'm now 100% bryopsis free!!!   Although I would still like to know who gave it to me last time so I could make a note of whom to never buy from again.

So if it's on a frag you can see it? If it is on there don't buy it? Is there a dip you can do to help? I have never seen it in person.

You may see it, but all it takes is a few microscopic cells......and disaster.   Peroxide will work on some algae, but the best option is to remove the plug and any non-living tissue.    Then quarantine and observe.......read the quarantine thread in the pest forum.

If I went to pick up a frag, and I could see bryopsis on it, I would flat out refuse it and let them know why.   The ONLY treatment for bryopsis is to run you magnesium at nearly lethal levels for coral.  It is the ONLY thing that might kill it.  Hence why I pitched half of what was in my frag tank.  It's a nasty nasty weed that I hope no one ever gets.  I was just lucky it never traveled to my display tank.

BTW.....I did try the magnesium thing, killed a handful of corals.....and it never really killed the bryopsis.  Drying out the tanks, scraping and sanitizing them was the only way to get rid of it.

Thanks Brian for the heads up. It is always better to prevent than to cure.

Now I'm scared. I think I seen some zoas on there that looks like they may have some peeking thru between the heads. Is there a clear differance between bryopsis & gha?

Hair algae is really fine and doesn't have the fronds like bryopsis.

Just stay away from swaps in general... they are dangerous for your pocket books.

Just be careful and you'll be fine.  Be sure to dip ALL incoming corals to rid it of pests.  The risk of bryopsis is a small one, your educated, you know what to look for, just go and have fun.  To be honest it's one of my favorite things in the hobby.  I spend a LOT less money at a swap than I would at the LFS on coral.  I enjoy buying frags and growing them out to show pieces.

Now that I'm looking, some of these people get under my skin....which is where my post is coming from.  I only sell frags that I would put into my system, nothing dirty, no pests, an algae.  There is a user that is driving me nuts, has 20 listings, and I see some nasties on a lot of them.

User on Fragswapper I definitely would not buy from:

Last swap in Dayton I bought a "fragspawn torch mix" from a person that claimed in their ad their frags were pest free. You should have seen all the white/red bugs (the bad ones) that came off that thing after a long dip. It was still closed up and stressed for a good week afterwards. Just gotta dip and clean very well when you get home with frags.

If I where to get some Copepods @ the swap, what's a good way to introduce them into my tank? Just dump them in, or net them out & place them in?

Acclimate same as you would a fish. You won't be able to net them out though as they would go through the net.

I do as Brian has stated, I use a reusable coffee filter to strain them out... it works just like a sieve

So...what did everyone score.....hopefully no pests.    I'm in the middle of doing my dips and re-mounting frags.   I haven't found any nasties yet.   Pictures to follow.

Those Rock/Flower anemones were off the hook, never saw anything like it.   I got one too, he's a bit grumpy from getting displaced from his old rock and onto a new rock, probably be a couple of days until I can get a good pic.

Got a good batch of millies and some nice acros....   Got a nice mini-colony of a forest fire digi from MrFish......When I got it home, I was extremely pleased to see the base was solid dark green.......

I was really bummed I couldn't make it.......my son had a game today...and I help coach......and it didn't go well today.  Not sure what it was but they didn't come to play and the other team did.....it was ugly.  My sister picked my stuff up, mentioned she saw you there.  We'll get together once I frag up the rest of my chalices.
