Here are a few pictures I took from a snorkel and dive trip to the Big Island of Hawaii on the Kona Coast. The last picture is of me. Enjoy!

Wow... Those yellow tangs look so cool.  Kind of makes me sad in a way to have one in my tank instead of letting him be in the ocean.
Thanks fro sharing!

The long yellow fish is some type of trumpetfish.

Believe it or not, I used a cheap, disposable underwater 35mm camera with a flash. I think I paid about $25 per camera, including film.

You definitely get a different perspective of this hobby with how fish and corals interact and how water really flows in and around  the reef when you experience it first hand. I may share pictures of my wife's snorkel & dive trip to the Great Barrier Reef as well, if I can find time to scan the pictures. She took an awesome  picture of a large Great White Shark that beached itself, but was still alive.

Ohhhh I would love to see those as well!!!

I have snorkeled in Destin Florida. It's nothing compared to places with reefs and many fish.  But i still get an amazing feeling of awe when being there.

Lobe Coral is a very large SPS coral. I think it can grow the size of your car and even larger. I attached another picture of Ko'a Lobe coral below for you.

Per Bigfalcon36's request, there will be no more pictures attached to this thread unless you go to Hawaii yourself and take some to share with Ohio Reef as well.

Okay, maybe a few more pictures will be posted, if you have questions about what you are viewing, etc ^-^

The silver schooling fish are not listed in my Hawaii Reef Creatures Guide, so I imagine they live outside the reef. Here is another picture of those fish if anyone else would like to try to identify them.

The Great Barrier Reef pics are not saved to a CD, so it will take some time to scan them. I will definitely share the picture of the Great White Shark with the entire group.

When (not if)  you go to Hawaii, I highly recommend a commercial snorkel & dive trip. I think we spent about $150 per person for the trip, which includes lunch, gear, a long boat ride and about 2 to 3 hours of snorkel time. I highly recommend going with Fair Wind if you make it to the Big Island.

Yes, "when" I go, I'll do that! I've heard that before.  A frined of mine has been to hawaii and she suggested the same thing.   I'll have to put Fair Wind in my notes. :)

We stayed in my in-laws time share, about 25 minutes north of Kona,  in Waikoloa. Did you visit Hapuna State Park Beach (one of the best beaches on the Island and the world, and it is free) or visit the Parker Ranch (great steaks!!!)? The reefs pics are from  Kealakekua Bay, where the Captain Cook Monument is located.

the only serious beach time we had was up north by the mauna kea resort right near hapuna.

http://www.hawaiiweb.com/hawaii/html/beaches/kaunaoa_beach.html

we spent a little bit of time on some of the little beaches by us, but not much.  my snorkeling pics are from kaunaoa and honaunau (place of refuge).
