any chance of recovery
« on: October 20, 2013, 17:16:23 »
My brother went down stairs last night to check on fish he said the temp was high In qt tank so he turned it down I went down to day found the tank under 7 degrees and my melanarus wrasse on his side breathing heavy. Do you think there's any chance he will recover?

Hard to say...probably in shock.   When you found the tank cold, the first reaction is to raise the temp back to normal quickly.   That increases the stress.   The best thing to do would be to increase the temp over a long period......Increasing the Oxygen in the tank with an air pump can't hurt.

Sounds like you need better temperature control.   Thermostats on heaters are notoriously bad, I would invest in a better heat controller.  Then set the controller on the heater as a safety it something sticks on.

Like stated .... hard to say uf he will pull through....... Many wrasses can be quite tough so like stated slow change in temp  slowly is your best bet

The square shoulder anthais in the same tank is doing fine. Does any one have a recommendation on controllers and a new heater to be safe this ones old.

Something like this will work fine. http://premiumaquatics.com/aquatic-supplies/TW-SC.html

Although I would take that $$ and invest in a full controller.

Do you have sand in your tank deep enough for the wrasse to hide?

For sand dwelling fish you can take a bowl of sand from main tank and sit it in quarantine tank and they will find it.

Is it safe to assume the temp drop is what killed the fish? The temp dipped as low as 64-66. Should I be worried about the anthias getting a disease or anything of the sorts the temp is back to normal and he is out eating and swimming like normal.

Hard to be sure then....but the cold alone should not have bothered the fish.  But the stress could have triggered something else.
