Yellow tang not acting normal
« on: August 24, 2016, 21:20:40 »
For about the last 2 weeks my yellow tang has not been eating and pretty much hiding in the back behind some rock. He has always been the most active fish and has always eaten well. He is hardly touching seaweed as well. All parameters are good and all the other fish are ok.

Any thoughts?  Any help would be appreciated.

What other tankmates?  Some may know but I do not, what is the footprint of the tank?

have you changed anything with the tank?  New additions, new food, new additives, lighting?

Any change in his appearance?  Washed out coloration, fins, stomach, spots?

Assume he's not flashing/scratching or you would have said.

Tank mates are an ocelaris clown, blue chromis, purple fire fish, Royal gramma, and a flame tail Blenny. They all get along with no issues. The tang is the ruler of the tank. The tank is 36" long x16 wide x 16 deep. (30 gallon long). All the fish are not fully grown. The tang is about 3" long. I knew when I got him that I would have to trade or sell him when he got to big for this tank. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks muttley

Nothing has changed except a bit of the rock scape but he was already acting this way. Thanks jjoos99

No flashing or scratching Humphrey. He is definitely thinner and perhaps a bit paler. I am assuming because he is not eating

Have you checked for stray voltage in the tank? I know tangs are very susceptible to that.  If you haven't done so already, I would suggest getting a grounding probe.

I will pull out my digital meter and measure to ground to see if there is any stray voltage. If I find any, I will unplug piece by piece until I find the culprit. I will get a probe regardless though as it is the right thing to do. Thanks a6walter

I have several items leaking voltage. Measuring tank water to ground I get 46 vac!  Does any one around here have or sell them?  If not I will order one ASAP.

I don't see why I couldn't just run a wire from the tank to ground temporarily till I get a proper probe. Anyone?

Yes that is exactly what you're going to get from online except for the fact the online one is made from titanium and will not corrode in saltwater.

Ok. Thanks for recommending I check that. I'm going to do that tonight.

I would get the titanium probe ASAP so the copper wire isn't in the tank.  Glad you found it quick and didn't get hurt!

So my tang now in an open back corner vs behind the rocks where I couldn't get a good look. He is thinner and has lost some color. He is also leaning to a side every 10-20 seconds. I'm assuming this is flashing?  I'm guessing this is not a good sign.

Might be an answer to some of your closed up coral issues as well, but electricity is not my strong suit.

He's looking pretty bad right now. Head against the back of the and barely breathing. Not moving his fins. This really stinks.
