Was that catepillar a monarch on some dill?

I "think" it was a monarch.  Not sure what it was on.  We saw so many I'm not really sure what was what.  It was very striking to me.

I believe monarch catepillars look like that and feed on dill.  It's either the monarchs or the ones that copy them.  Either way, the butterflies are gorgeous.

That is the caterpillar of a Black Swallowtail. They feed on all carrot relatives from Anise, Carrot, Parsley, Dill, to Fennel. If you startle the they protrude two bright orange "horns" from their head that emit a very odd smell like that of a stink bug only different.

Monarchs only feed on species of Milkweed (Asclepias).

Jon, I'm on to you.  You know everything, don't you.   ;)  Ok, so I was 12 when I last saw those catepillars...so...monarchs...swallowtails...meh.  Either way, they're pretty.  I try.  I do remember the horrible smell.  :shudders:
