volume calculator, circle?
« on: April 20, 2010, 19:15:24 »
I am trying to get a guess on the size of my pond to attempt to narrow down which filter I want.  I can get a rough guess on the square section (about 4200 gallons) however I do not know how to calculate the round part.  It's about 20 feet across & about 5 feet deep.

I just called a soon to be relative and his calculations stated about 12,000 gallons

we did pie r squared then multiplied that by the debth then converted that area into gallons by multiplying the area by 7.5 I believe to get gallons

If I use the above calculator & put in 240in (length) x 240in (width) x 60in (depth) it gives me about 10,000g

If I use 240x60x60 it's about 3,000g

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume

If you scroll down on this page, there are equations for calculating the volume based on the shape of the item. If the pond gets gradually deeper, and is deepest in the middle, you might be able to use the calculation for the cone. Then the only thing you have to remember is that Pi is 3.14 in order to plug it into the equation. Hope that helps.

It's more of a cylinder, walls are pretty close to vertical & the bottom slopes maybe a foot from outside to middle.....

pie r squared = --- x h (dept or heigth) = ---- x 7.5 (coverts area to us gallons) = ------

so 3.14 x 10^2 = 314 x 5 = 1570 x 7.5 = 11,775 gallons

Looks like 16,000 ish gallon pond when I add the other section to it....
