Got nem problems...
« on: October 07, 2012, 21:47:41 »
I have a largish piece of Timora rock (about 20 lbs) with 4 RBTA's and 4 long-tentacled RBTA's on it - 8 total nems on the rock.  When fully opened, you can barely see the rock.  Need to part with them but want the rock.  Ideas?

If I was to sell this piece, it would be about $250.  That's $25 each for the nems and $50 for the rock, which is a STEAL.  If someone wants to purchase, I will post pics.  The clowns that are hoting the nems are not included.  They can host something else, like my hammers.

I would try What larry suggests, either move the rock to a less diserable location, or Place a powerhead pointing the rock...

I have heard you can also use an ice cube near the foot of the nems and they will move once the water becomes to cold in that area. I have heard this from more than one person, but never tried it my self.

+1 on the ice cube and/or powerhead trick...if you make it uncomfortable where it is, it should move to a new location

Here is the rock.  3 of the BTA's in the rear are not visible from this angle.  you can see the reflection of two of them in the side glass.  For a scale reference, the derasa clam is 9" wide.

OK, here is the deal.  I'm going to remove the rock to a large tub, and work to release the nems from the rock without injury.  Once released, I will put them into my sump for holding.

If you are seriously interested, the large long ranbowy-red BTA's are $40 each - there are 3.  The smaller one is $35.  4 total.

The standard RBTA's are $30 each regardless of size.  4 or 5 total.

I need to know who is serious about what and how soon you can pick up.  If you want more than one we can work out a deal.

Thanks.

That is easy.  Simply point a circulation pump directly on the rock.  Then wait about an hour and begin to gently pry the anemones off the rock by the base / foot using your finger nails.   Once you get a side of the base off, gently slip your finger under and pry it completely off the rock.  You can also use the edge of an old credit card on the base of the anemones to remove them.  I have done this many times with great success and never damaged any of them.  Hope that helps.  Oh, I have also used an ice cube on some more stubborn anemones and it has worked well.  Just rub the ice cube on the edge of the foot and once it lifts that part up, push your finger under the foot and pry it off the rock.

Thanks for all of the advice.  I sum this activity up by the formula at=pd2.  attitudinal tenacity of the nem to grip the rock is equal to the porosity of the rock times the determination of the nem squared.

I have 4 standard RBTA's off of the rock safely.  There were only two long tentacled rainbow RBTA's that made up that huge beast in the front.  All are off of the rock; one rainbow is damaged and will be in observation for one - two weeks to ensure that it will survive.  The other rainbow is looking good and will go to Kenn if ok in one - two weeks.

Dibs list:

Ray
Kenn
Myreef55

I will not part with any until I am certain that they are ok, and may keep one for myself.

They are in my sump under constant lighting, so they are safe.
