90 Gallon Reef build.
« on: June 01, 2012, 17:45:18 »
Well my 28G nanocube just wasnt big enough so I bought a 90G rr tank.  The addiction has started :-[   This is going to be a slow build but I will post alot of detailed pics of the build process. I started off selling my 75G freshwater tank and kept the stand.  I purchased a Aqueon 90G RR tank from a friend.  the tank was drained and sat in his garage for a yr or so, needless to say it was in pretty bad shape.  All the plumming was there  and he even threw in a Mag 9.5, Hydor seltz L40 2 pumps, two Korilla 4's and Two Korilla 3's and a big blue Magfloat all for $150.  First up I refinished the old stand I had from my 75.  Its just a pine marineland stand, nothing special.  My sump fit and I already had it so I decided to keep it.  This was my first time doing any kind of staining and it turned out pretty good.

Painted the inside with zinnser 1.2.3 paint/primer mold and mildew resistant paint, about 3 healthy coats.

Sanded the whloe stand down to bare wood
Then used Minwax stain (jacobean), 3 coats.

Followed it up with 3 coats of minwax poly (semi gloss)  Hard to tell but it has a slight sheen

Here is what I was dealing with when I first picked up the tank.  I was worried about scratches but he assured me there were none.  I got it for hell of a deal considering all the powerheads and return pump he threw in so I said what the hell.

I filled the tank up threw everything in there turned all the pumps and powerheads on, threw in two heaters and 8 gallons of white distilled vinegar, let is run for two days and everything came out good as new with a little elbow grease.  I even inlisted my 9yr old son and introduced him to my kent scraper, LOL.  To my delight there wasnt a scratch on the tank.

Here is the sump I will be using.  Look familliar twizted1??   I figure its around 30gal.  It still needs modified but it fits and holds water just fine.  Once my main man Lonnie (Mr. Acrylic) gets his hands on it it will be perfect!

I am so impressed.  If I had seen that tank at a garage sale or via craigslist I'm not sure I would have bought it.  Between the work on the stand, the tank and the sump, you have everything looking PRIMO.  Can't wait to see this continue.  MasonRob (I have 90G tank envy).

Well like I said this is a SLOW build..  I had my heart set on LED's but the guy I bought the tank from still had his old canopy and 6 bulb TEK T5 fixture.  Well $100 later it was mine.  It needs a little cleaning and the canopy needs refinished.  He put about 5 coats of black spray paint on it and tit is a PITA to get off.  The light is nice and just needs the reflectors cleaned and maybe polished up a bit due to salt creep. The canopy is custom built and the light fixture sits inside of it nicely.

Now I have to sand the canopy, paint the inside white and stain it to match my stand.

Got everything in the tank threw in a powerhead and a heater, let the cycle begin... Im gonna throw in some rock and sand from my 28G.  Is there a process for this or just put it in there?

I also ordered my bulbs today, I Hope they look good.  The pics arent the best but you get the idea.  I also just placed the rock in, I will be getting more dry rock this week or next so I will do some scaping then.  Looks pretty good though.  How much more rock do I need?

Didnt know you guys sold them, ill check them out.  Few questions..  My water is a tad cloudy is it from the die off on the rocks?  They sat out in the sun for a week then I rinsed them and scrubed them.  My skimmer is actually making a tiny bit of skimmate Im guessing from this as well.

Yeah it's normal. I've got 3 bottles left in the fridge below the cricket bins. If anyone asks Andrew said they were $19.98 a bottle since no one knows they are there. Let them warm up some and they will be going crazy in there.

The cloudiness is from bacteria bloom and is normal. Considering getting a bottle of Dr. Tim's Bacteria. It will bring things along much much faster.

It is the two products used together for a speedy cycle.

Well I added a big bottle of Dr.Tims one and only bacteria yesterday.  Im keeping a log and checking ammonia, nitrite, nitrate daily to see how goos this stuff works. I also added a couple of nice chunks of dry rock along with a few small pieces of live rock from my 28G. I also got all my bulbs in yesterday.  I went with this combination front to back
Blue +
Purple+
Blue+
GE6500K
Blue+
Blue+

All ATI bulbs in my TEK 6 x 54 watt fixture (48")

Well as of today the cycle is complete.  It took 10 days to cycle using Dr. Tims one and only.  I just followed the directions and added the ammonium chloride to feed the bacteria and wala...  As of today the ammonium is 0, Nitrite is 0 and nitrate is 5.0..  Probably going to add my clowns in the next few days, then some more live rock then some more fish, rock, fish.  Then corals..  Gradually over the next 2 weeks or so.

I finally got the PERFECT bulb combination..  This is with a TEK 6 x 54 fixture, Fixture is dead silent.  Front to back

ATI Blue +
ATI Coral +
ATI Purple +
ATI Coral +
GE 6500K
ATI Blue +

It is really bright white with a hint of blue.  Lots of pics to come.  Ive got All my livestock transfered over to my 90.  The corals arent really exactally where I want them but they will do for now.  Here is whats in there:

2 clowns
3 pajama cardnials
1 Flame angel
Lawnmower blenny
Yellow watchman goby
1 cleaner shrimp

Leather
Toadstool W/ green polyups
Green hammer
frogspawn
GSP
Candycane
Red mushrooms
potatochip coral
green implosions
few different zoas
Duncan

I ordered my CUC they should be here this week.  Ive had several snails in there since it cycled and I threw in 3 small blue leg hermitts in there as well.  I have been testing my params daily with no change when I added my livestock.  I am a firm believer in DR Tims one and only.  I probably added 20lbs of live rock from my 28G.  I had some diatoms and some GHA.  The lawnmower blenny has been going to town on this buffet of GHA, He is so fat he can hardly swim.

Im not sure on some of these names of corals so If I name them worng correct me if you can.

Here is a brain I got from Larrynews.  It is bigger than a softball..

Here is an open brain i recently purchased

Here is what I was told was tounge coral

Here is a nice chunk of birdsnest I bought off of Larry as well:

As you can see I accadentaly fragged a few pieces during transport, well see if they grow.

Here is a purple scroll:

This was bought as a meteor shower, not sure what it really is, looks awesome though.

My duncan and hammer coral

I believe orange bam bams and a small piecs of leather and some candycane hiding in the back

My green polyup toadstool and a coral I have no clue what it is, I call it the neon green tree, lol

More pics..  I now have a kohle tang, yellow tang, flame angel, lawnmower blenny, yellow watchman goby, pair of clowns, 3 pajama cardnials, cleaner shrimp and a baby hippo tang.
I know its overstocked but all my tanks have always been..  The hippo is only 1" right now I will move him along when he outgrows my 90.

Here is what was told me a potatochip coral

A couple of red shrooms and a cool piece of tonga branch Im putting some GSP on

Overall this has been a great transformation from the above pics to what the tank looked like the day I brought it home.

Thanks to all the help from everyone on this site and especially my good friend Lonnie (blown76mav) for all the help.

Now to just sit back and watch everything grow (fingers crossed)

VERY VERY nice :)

also that is indeed a meteor shower... I would put it lower in the tank and it will really start to pop. If you place a few small pieces of rubble next to it, it should spread so you can frag it easier.

A VERY nice open brain I got off of Larrynews

What is the difference in the two open brains pictured here?  They were bought as brains but look totally different.

and gobs of Anthelia i'll probably pay you to take.

Not much, just floated the bag for 20 minutes then put him in a container and slowly added my water.  I dont have a QT tank he went right into the display tank.  You just have to find out what they want to eat.  Mine wont eat pellet or mysis but loves brine.

I have been thinking of getting one from live aquaria's divers den. Then just plunking it right in the dt. I have gotten several fish from la & none have ever had any problems. Just a gamble.

Just picked up a sweet Midas Blenny from PSP in findlay.  Here is my Livestock list:
Yellow Tang
Kole tang
Copperband Butterfly
Green Mandarin
Yellow watchman goby
Midas blenny
Pair of black clowns
(3) pj Cardnials

No more livestock for me, now corals, that is a different story.  I have my eye on a prize Lobo that I will be buying if I cant find anything cooler @ the frag swap in March.  I talk my self out of getting a clam every time I go to PSP, not sure why...

Thanks guys...  Its a work in progress, Ive had great luck with the KISS method.  Ive been keeping chiclids for ever just got into the salt scene about a year and a half ago.  This tank has been up and running since august.  Ive been waiting for the frag swap but I think im almost running out of room. :-[    I guess theres always room for Zoas...

All the help ive gotten on this site has helped me tremendously, Thanks

Not much to update, bought a few small frags at the bluffton swap
Orange one in front (forgot name)  I suck with coral names :-[

This one as well, love the color..  Just have to find a good spot for it, ill probably just break it off the plug and glue it to a rock.

On a crappy note my Copperbanded butterfly was dead when I got up today..  I knew it was comming, he just started eating less and less.  I tried all kinds of stuff to get him to deat different foods.  That was my second one and I will not buy another.  Too hard to keep IMO.  Now I have to find something else to replace him with.

Well I lost me prize Lobo the other day (red/blue one)  It got stung and withered away to nothing.  That really bummed me out.   I recently sold off some live rock to clear out a corner of my tank for another brain I got today.  This is the biggest brain Ive ever seen in a fish tank.  It measures 10" in diameter, it is beautiful!  This exact piece of coral is what made me go from freshwater to salt.  It came from a good friends tank who is taking a break from the hobby for a while.

A couple other brains doing great!  Im bit of a LPS freak!

Overall I love my 90..  Almost everything is doing GREAT and thriving.  I only dose Bright well two part A,B about 50ml each per week, not sure if that a lot or not but my corals like it and my Dersa clam has doubled in size in the 2.5 months I've had him.  I have had some corals die my chalice chunk (size of a 50 cent piece) died over night, I mean turned ghost white in a day.  My nice sized frag of Sour apple BD died recently.  My Green mandarin passed away this past weekend I think he ate all my pods as I only see them in my sump. I added another copperband butterfly this past week, he has already wiped out my tank of any and all aiptasia and feather dusters.  A lot of my corals are encrusting, I even have Pavona encrusting up the back glass (potato chip coral).  As far as livestock goes this is what I have now:
Pair of breeding clowns
Yellow tang
kole tang
blue chromis
copperband butterfly
3- PJ cardnials
midas blenny
YWG
and a yellow clown goby

I can't remember the name some sort of big acan. Heath @changing tide gave it to me to see if it would color up in my tank. He got it from someone, it's totally bleache d out. It puffs up fine and eats well, we'll see how it goes.

corals.

Overall everything is doing excellent except for my sps..  Just cant seem to keep them for very long.  The ponape BN is doing the best though.  I am rehabbing a few different lobos as well and they are looking a lot better since I first got them.  I just dose about 50ml of brightwell a&b weekly and 20G water change every 3-4 weeks... My LPS are starting to out grow the tank and what started out as a small nickel size RBTA turned into 8 nice sized ones (sold off 3) and one huge one...  I love them but they are a PITA.  very hard to get off my liverock.

Looks really nice Jeremy. The RBTA's are sweet, but with their ability to split and move they can for sure create some issues. I hope to isolate mine on an island when I get the new system up and running.

Tank looks great as usual. Try dosing 10ml daily opposed to weekly for the SPS.

I'd add to that; everything looks great, but there's a lot of soft corals in there that may also be stressing your SPS'.  Carbon?  Water change every 2 weeks?  Just my opinion...
90g SPS and LPS reef tank, 35g sump, ceramic rock by The Alternative Reef, Neptune Apex w 2 X EB8's, Moonlight module, ATI Sunpower Dimmable 8 X 39W T5's, Octopus Extreme 160 skimmer, PM Kalkwasser Reactor, 2 X Vortech MP40's, Geo 618 Ca reactor

Various thriving montipora, acropora, stylopora, wellsophyllia, blastomussa, hammer, anchor, and frogspawn, lobophyllia, rhizotrychus, pavona, scroll, and pagoda SPS and LPS corals, but no fish because I was too stupid to QT...

I do run a bag of carbon.  My bird nest do ok. No crazy growth but that's fine with me.

What is that strange looking stick in the middle of all those LPS and Softies? Your corals look super healthy and happy, nice stuff Jeremy.

Thanks guys... Yea the "stick" is a test piece. If it does well I'm going to get some others.  No idea what it is got it for $10 as a mystery sps... Lol  I'm very happy with my lps. The new brains complete the tank. Now I'm focused on different colored zoos.

Though I like the SPS, your tank is a classic example of a beautiful reef composed of LPS and softies. I have added a few LPS to my new system and am looking to add a few more.

I swear my big brain is getting bigger every month...  Here it is next to a good 4-5" marbeled brain for size comparison.

Mussin, how do you keep those big brains from stinging each other. I have acquired a few piece and they are deadly with their sweeper tentacles. I have a nice favia that just melted a piece of lobo.

The wellsos don't have sweepers. You can bunch them up.   My big green maze brain needs room it throws out some decent sweepers.  Lobos can be aggressive too.  My big brain is a lobo but it is mellow

Looks like the left corner is popular with the local fish :)
