29 Gallon Mixed Reef Build (July 2010)
« on: July 26, 2010, 18:38:28 »
This is the link to my new build thread after money troubles with my planned 75. To read what went wrong, please go here.

http://www.ohioreef.com/index.php?topic=8949.45

I am starting with my current 29 gallon FOWLR. It was my "learning tank, as it was the tank I started the hobby with, & did quite a few things I would like to fix.

haha. Thanks. I'll post a pic of the tank as it stands now.

I need to do a WC first. It's not lookin' too good at the moment with my nitrate-covered-crushed-coral of a sandbed. lol.

Thanks.

Just dot done with WC and idk why but i did something wrong and now the salt didn't dissolve all the way? There's salt crystals all in the water. (Got distracted by the puppy who knocked over the other dog's water bowl. Boy did  that make a mess in the kitchen. -.-)

Here's how the tank looks now, just after water change...

:-/ See those little white dots? That's salt...

ok, I wasn't sure. I have only had a problem with this once before.

Currently in the tank is 1 Coral Beauty Angel, 2 Pacific Cleaners & a dilapidated clean up crew. + 8 pounds of fully cured coraline encrusted rock.

Oh there's also one 8" long bristle worm! :P You can atually see him in this pic above. It's squirmin' up along the back left corner.

He's a biggie..

Here's what I'd like to make the stand look like. Basically just skin it with breadboard then put a trim over the edges.

front

side

I think I want doors too.

I think I want to add 3 yellow stripe clingfish & 1 tail spot blenny. Also a squamosa clam, maybe a maxima if I put it at the top.

3 Yellow tripe clingfish.

Thanks to both of you. I am actually at a "draw" between architecture & marine biology. lol. I don't know which one to go to college for.

MIT has(I think) a thing where they pretty much pay for tuition if a family makes under a certain salary.

But I was also looking into James Cook university in Australia for marine biology.

Here's some extra things I've drawn out..

The 2 level side cabinet. This will be made in 2 sections for easy moving & assembly.

The canopy

This grove is for the retro fit light fixture. Rather than mounting it to the top of the canopy, it will be mounted to a board  with 2 pins on each end(pins will be in these groves.) when the front of the canopy is opened, I can pull the whole fixture out & change bulbs.

Here's another pic. I added holes in for better ventilation of heat/air.

Also, see the vertical line at about the fron 3rd to half on the end? The whole front 1/3 will lift up on a hinge.

  too big

This is what I am getting ready to put on my sons 37g :) canopy. I am going to use 3 or 4. They only run $15 each

Thermaltake ISGC Fan 8" Cooling Fan   - AF0043

The air flow is about 25CFM and they have to be modified a little because they are DC current

Just remember that if you install fans, make them PULL the air through. air doesn't do well being forced into a space (unless your feeding it into a cars engine  ;D ... but thats another show   ) ...u get a compression effect.

Those fans are 8". Isn't that a bit much for a 29g?(one fan would fill the end of the canopy) lol I plan on using 4 fans for the canopy.

I was thinking one fan on each end & the 2 fans pulling air up.

For the fans on the ends...should they both go the same direction, to pull air through the canopy? I wasn't sure, as I would also have fans blowing air up. With that in mind my other option would be to have both end fans pull air into the canopy then the top fans would pull air out.

His tank has a 250watt MH over it  ;D ...also I am HUGE on having a back up system in place. I am going a little overkill, just in case the AC craps out unexpectantly and I need all the cooling  I can get from the fans. and at $15 a piece it's a easy system to have in place.

My rule of thumb for air movement is 2 to 1 ...2 fans evacuating a space to 1 fan supplying air. (IMO :)  )

Yeah that would be great if I was doing the 75 I had planned for. But this is just 96w of HOT5 over a 29g.

Though I am sure it works great for him.

That is an 80mm fan.    And for what it is worth, Radioshack carries a 120mm thermaltake for $9.99

You are correct !!! I had my macros on my work laptop turned off and wasn't paying attention

IMO I am not impressed with 120 mm because I am looking for more flow. with the 80mm a little less air volume is produced, but more airflow. And the 120mm produces more air volume because it has bigger blades but limits the airflow because it is bigger.

Late-night update! ;D I went to my so-called, "local" fish store today(Tiffin, has no fish store, so I have to go to Findlay for all my stuff.). I got new sand, well actually aragonite, for the tank to replace my crushed coral. I need to go to the hardware store to get eggcrate for the bottom of the tank before I can put this sand down. I also need to drill the tank. Which means moving the fish somewhere...?

I also got about 5 lb more rock while I was there. Looks pretty neat. I will post a picture tomorrow.

Now, I'm off to bed! :P

  !! STOP !!

This is only IMO ... Dont do the egg crate !!  ... I have had big problems with this stuff in the past when I had a FO system. I just think it is a problematic system. Just spend your money on more sand and go with a deep sand bed. Much more effective and less problems.

I agree with the egg-crate bottom.  DONT DO IT.  I am having issues with it right now.  I am actually in the process of tearing down my 150 and starting all over because I cant get it under control.

What's wrong with it?

Also, a DSB can actually over time create hydrogen sulfide in the tank, which is toxic.

Not all eggcrate causes problems. I had a major issue with white (and still do), black has been great so far. Not a single bit of algae, when my white is covered in it.

Wow, haven't been on  in a while. The new site looks cool.

Now I have an update too. haha :)

I ordered an overflow kit from Glass Holes over the weekend. I also ordered a refractometer & 2 of the new Koralia Nano powerheads, the 425's.(from F&S Aquatics). The FS order supposedly shipped out yesterday & the OF kit will ship out on the 9th, as the guy is not in town right now.

I am working on a DIY project to turn my HOB filter(Tetra, Whisper 30) into a HOB refugium until I have the money for a return pump. When I get the pump, I will have fuge in the 10g below the DT. The DIY fuge will go on the QT.

The room under the stairs will be used a fish room(as mentioned in my previous build thread). I'd like to use a 20g long for a QT & a 5g bucket for top-off. I would like to get a 32g brute trashcan for stored SW for wC's f I have space in there.

Finally got the powerheads. They arrived a day earlier than expected. Kudos to Foster & Smith Aquatics & FedEx! :D :)

I have one powerhead(they are both koralia noano 425's) aiming the water's surface. The other is half way down the left side aiming at the rocks.

Now..to tackle my cyano problem... :(

With the new refactometer, I will do a WC soon. I'l put some pictures up, hopefully monday, so I will have switched everything out by then.

While I like the flow I have, I think I could have benefited from one more of the 425s. I got them mainly for the gph rating compared tot their size. I didn't want them to be too noticeable. For sps I feel(literally)may need another PH. not sure. I've got about 30X turnover.

It's been quite some time. I've gotten a lot done too.

I drilled the tank with a 1" diamond drill bit & then installed my 300-600gph rated Glass Holes overflow box. A Mag Drive 7 will be used for the return pump in a 10g sump.

The 10g sump plan. 3g fuge on the right with a Coralife 65 on the left for the skimmer.

I got the glass already but have not yet built the sump because I have the fish in it(so the DT could be drilled).

Here's the glass cutting and OF install.

I also painted the back of the tank with Krylon Flat Black spray paint.

This is the stencil I used to start the hole. It is made of MDF, which would make an easy DIY project. This one came with the OF box that I bought.

Then I painted the inside of the stand to make things easy to see...

Oh yeah. The plumbing...

This line in back that comes off of the overflow line is for quick water changes. Simply turn the ball valve & change the direction of water flow to a bucket beneath the output of that line. The plumbing will go through a wall to the room under our staircase(which will behind the fish tank).

Under the DT. This is still dry-fitted. About as far as I have gotten... I haven't ordered the pump yet.

Then I re-aquascaped the tank. I still need 15 lbs of rock.

The crabs enjoy the detritus that got thrown around.

I will be going with 2X boost LED bulbs(the 3 blue 2 white diodes) & will be testing them out on SPS corals for a school science project, with my tank as the subject. We shall see how that goes. Boost LEDs are supposed to be "reef capable" for even SPS corals, but the bulbs haven't been on the market all that long.

If these work great for sps, I'll be getting a Maxima clam in Dec.

www.boostled.com

This is what the tank is supposed to look like when it is all finished. Should look pretty sharp.

That looks very nice, well done Seano. One observation though, I don't think the quick water change will work because there is nothing to push the water out of the tank. Unless you are running your return pump dry and only changing a couple of gallons. You will need to drill another hole low in the tank.

I'm still working on that idea. The return section only holds about a gallon of water. So to do a 10% change, I'd have to flush it 3 times.

Thanks for the compliments.

Unfortunatley there aren't many options here. Two and three kind of defeat the purpose of "easy"
1.) Drill a hole lower in the tank perhaps behind the rock so the water will drain out when you open the ball valve. Don't forget to use a PVC drain cover so you don't flush fish.
2.) siphon water out of the tank into the overflow and part way down the drain line to keep siphon going. (may be a little tough to Start the siphon)
3.) displace water in tank by droping something in the tank so water goes in the overflow. Perhaps a full water jug
4.) make your overflow box so you can turn it upside down

I'm glad you brought that up. I've decided to go & drill another hold in the back wall below my overflow. I will use a mailbox(top part, cut off) to ide the plumbing.

Can I get the parts for a bulkhead fitting from lowes?

Found a new house & should be moving this week. The tank will be set up in the dining room of the new place.

Here's a sneak-peek. :)

Tank stand will be skinner to match the woodwork in the house.

That's just what I was thinking. :) Here it is now that we are more settled in. Once I get some RO water & more salt mix, the rebuild shall begin.

I've decided to go with 3 of the Boost LED bulbs instead of just 2. I will have 3X 40* optic bulbs. 2 with 3blue & 2white diodes. The middle bulb will be 4blue & 1white diode. Each bulb is supposed to cover about a 12" X12" area, so I should have some good overlap.  I'm still deciding on what pendent fixtures to get.

Here's a link... www.boostled.com

40* optics will reach deeper depths(recommended for 16" +), while 60* is more spread out(but still amount of light, just a different reflector).

You could. But I don't see a need to spend $75 on a sump light when a spiral cf & a $6 reflector do the trick just fine.

i will have to see if i can borrow a camera because trying to take a picture with my light on just doesn't work. the camera only picks up the blue and really intensifies it enough to wash everything out. i will get one this weekend hopefully.

All cameras will do that unless you adjust the white balance. Even inexpensive point and shoot cameras typically have a custom white balance setting. Check the menu to see if you can find it.

Dry fitted all the main plumbing today... Here's what I have got. I had a lot of spare parts so I will probably return those to Lowe's.

I will baffle the sump tomorrow with GE 100% silicone.

30 lb. bag of aragonite for my sandbed. I will probably buy another bag 7]& another koralia 450 powerhead.

This is where my OF box is. I will drill hole in the lower back for the WC line & the white lines show where I will be closing it in using plastic(maybe mailbox walls?)

ARGH! I started to baffle the sump, before realizing the glass is cut to the wrong size... I had it cut for my, or what i thought was, as 10g. I replaced that 10g tank with a new one, which is slightly skinnier. I still have the orginal tank, but it has my hermit crabs & rock in it..

I guess tomorrow's project will be to bring the old 10 over & switch out the tanks. *sigh*

I brought the other tank over...along with everything else in the house. It's hard to get around in here.  :o

Here is a picture of the 2 tanks, which are both supposedly 10gallons...About a 1/2" difference. :hmmmm:

The larger one which fits the baffles, will become the sump. The smaller will be a 10g planted tank in the library for Dad. I'll start a build thread for that tank when I find a table to put it on.

I glued the main part of the overflow line tonight.

Clear PVC cleaner & all purpose PVC cement.

That's about it for now...I will clean & baffle the sump tomorrow. I will also be getting a used coralfe 65 from a reefer on another forum.

This beautiful 120g reef tank is from the other forum I am a member of. I believe it is about 1-2yrs old this past month.

I will be doing the same idea as this tank with the left side. The OF side of the glass is covered up with wood to mach the rest of the stand. I think it makes it look really sharp; I will be doing the same.

For moonlights I wan to do a dimmable CREE LED build, using a driver, 8 LEDs(4white 4 blue(trying to find 420nm)) & a dimmer, which can be hooked to a controller.

Anyone know where I can get 420nm LED's? The Royal blues are 440-460nm. 420 is best for coral growth if used as practical moonlighting.

My 29g has 2 bluish white LEDs (cyberwollf will know what they actually were, since we built then at the summer meeting at his house).  2 in a 29g is pretty bright.  I see that you are going for dimmable.  I assume this is so you can get the light spread you want, but not completely flood the tank with light at night, right?

If you find a source for 420nm LEDs, please share.  I would like to get some for my tank, as well.  :smiley-happy112:

I contacted Boost LED who has a new light fixture, set to come out late January of 2011. For moonlights they have 420nm LEDs. I sent them a PM. But without missing a beat, they replied & would not reveal their source. lol.

Yeah, I am not sure about the CREE build. I want to...I would really like to create full day/night lighting phases. But I'm sure it would also be really bright if used in addition to the PAR30 bulbs. I'll have to ponder this idea before making anymore lighting purchases.
