Title: RODI WATER SMELLS

Hey everybody. I decided to start making my own water and bought a 75gpd system from BRS. I bought a brute trash can for mixing and storage. The water has a weird smell to it. Is this normal? Should I always circulate the water or only 24hrs before water change? I have only mixed about 50-60 gallons so far and I am using Brightwell neomarine salt.

Definitely rinse the container.

After you rinse and clean.  Put in new water, measure the tds before it goes in....make sure it is zero, then measure after a little bit, make sure it stays zero.

I use Brightwell and it stinks to me, but I have never had any problems from it. I will say this, Brightwell salt is generally lower Alk than most of us use. I just add a little baking soda to compensate.

Yup I’ll second what Steve says. I don’t use it anymore but when I did it had a funky smell to it.

What salt does everyone recommend?

It really depends on the parameters you keep your system at. I keep alk at 9.0-9.2 so I use a combo of reef crystals (it’s cheap and high in minerals) and Red Sea Blue (low alk to offset the Reef Crystals) Or Live Aquaria salt (again low alk to offset Reef Crystals). I like using two salts in the hopes that if one is lacking in some trace element, the other salt will compensate.

I like the LiveAquaria salt but there has been bad batches in the past that have caused issues for people in the club. The bucket I’m on right now from them hasn’t caused any. I’ll probably switch to regular Instant Ocean once I finish the buckets I have. The general consensus is that it really doesn’t matter what brand you use. What does matter is what matches your tank parameters. If you keep your alkalinity lower then something like Brightwell is a great option.

I use Red Sea coral pro salt. Only because I was buying my water premixed from a local store, when I started up my tank, so I have just stuck with it and I’ve had good results so far.

Tropic Marin Pro here I used RC/IO Fritz few others didn't find they mixed as clean as Tropic Marin Pro. It may be a tad bit more expensive then most salts but its also pharma grade materials also my tank is happy. Unless someone else can come out with a better salt I think I will be TMP for life
