So I'm thinking tomorrow is the day to start foaming a rock wall for the 90 gallon aquarium. I might even post some pictures depending on how it turns out, or you may just get to see pictures of mike(slandis3) covered in black pond foam lol. ::)
-
Good luck and watch your back slandis!
-
Hum justing is just about the rifght hiegh to be coverd in foam and used as my foam wall in the 240.
-
Be sure to get some (a lot of) expanding foam in Justin's mouth too..... ;D
-
well mike and I started it tonight got one section rocked and foamed we will see how it turned out in the morning
-
well we would have gotten more done but we were to busy making fun of Joel while he was drinking his O'Douls.
-
true true ;D
-
LOL...
-
You relying on the foam to hold the rock or you do something else? I'm starting a similar project tomorrow and want to know if you screwed anything up
-
both zip ties and the foam will work to hold everything
-
and the egg crate dont forget that, thanks for the confidence joe ;D
-
He has complete confidence... That you will screw it up haha.

This is not done yet but it is started, I made three sections for easy removal I have done one section so far and I still plan on putting epoxy over the rock and foam and putting sand on top of that to make everything look similair, but its a start. Comments are welcome as long as they are not from Andy or Joe ;D
-
Fantabulous. ;D
What kind of epoxy are you going to use?
-
have not got that far yet was thinking about using regular old fiberglass resin dont see why that wouldnt work... but I have read on other threads of some two part epoxy from hobby stores so I may go check that out and see price wise what works for me
-
DONT USE RESIN FROM YOUR LOCAL PARTS STORE. Its not the same as epoxy. That stuff is not water proof. There can be a nasty release of chemicals if it is not 100% cured. There was a thread on rc a while back a guy used that and lost his entire tank because it leached something into the tank. There is a place in centerville called woodcrafters ( I think) they have a 2 part epoxy that will work.
-
Wood Crafters in in the Cross Point shopping center located at the corner of Main St / st rt 48 and alex bell. It's right off 675

I stand by the things I have said about you ;D
-
The rock wall looks really nice, Justin.
-
thanks I plan on adding a cave i think
-
if you spray the foam drop in the rocks and then sprinkle it with sand before it dries the sand will stick to the foam
-
so any updates?
-
yeah here is an update its negative a million degrees in my garage and I'm way to warm indoors to go finish it outdoors lol. I may try and finish it over break now that I have a little more time from school. I will keep you posted.

We are planning a similar project, as I want an overhang in the tank approx. 12" into the tank from the side wall and approx. 3" below the water line. We work with polyurethane foam at work all of the time when making automotive parts, and the adhesion properties of this stuff is great. I've considered useing my tile saw and cut the rock flat, apply the white insulating foam from the can you can get at walmart (same stuff, isocyanate and polyol) to the flat rocks, and glue them directly to the glass. Eggcrate might be nice for some things, but in my experience with eggcrate in the industrial world, it's not UV-stable, and can get brittle over time when exposed to UV light. Again, I'm not experienced in the reef world, so I freely admit that I may be talking out my arse when speaking about the applications of eggcrate in a reef tank. I'm using schedule 80 pvc in my tank where I need a framework. Project you're working on looks good, though.
