Vivid Aquariums
« on: September 01, 2012, 20:14:09 »
The owner of Vivid Aqauriums in LA County, California is a super cool guy.  They have great stuff and I have always received quality livestock from them.  Dave has been experimenting with a laser that kills aiptasia.  His 800 gallon display tank is absolutely amazing in person!

I know, right!  I think the laser is about $130.  Expensive, but if it actually works, that is awesome.

Boon and I were talking about this yesterday. I think he is going to get one personally. It would be a cool club tool but they are really dangerous. Doesn't take but a couple seconds to cause eye damage. Wonder if in some cases it could bounce off glass and burn someone.

Could the club have any liability if someone got injured? If not I don't see why not if folks want one and treasure has budget.

Don't the release eggs or spores or something as they die, spredding the problem further? If it really works and would not harm anything else in or out of the tank ( if used properly). I would love to use one. I would even be willing to make a donation towards it if necessary.

That is cool.
Thanks Kenn on liability thing, I guess their probably isn't liability as long as we have everyone that wants to reserve post that they have read the hazards and usage instructions.

LOL, Funny this came up, as Brian stated we were just talking about this...  I think it'd be a great tank tool if it works as described, But there are obvious inherent dangers... More so than with our normal tools. Most all the lasers I have researched at this level come with Suffcient eye protection. There is a risk of the beam reflecting, so most all my reserach advises against anyone else in the room at time of application... I have yet to see a report that states the laser failed to kill any aiptasia, and I have seen quite a few reviews that state they have yet to return...

I read several reports of people using them on trouble snails, shrimps, and crabs with great success, as well as mojanos and other various tank pests.
There is some worry of the laser getting into the fish's eyes, Most have reported no trouble from this, and state that even though their fish will chase a weak red laser, it has zero interest in the higher powered laser. However with a laser of this power, any angle of viewing will cause some form of eye damamge... so just having them near it risks theirs and anyone else in the room with out proper protection eye health.

I am highly interested in this... Most these lasers heat up at point to 400degf at 10m. I have watched videos and review of people killing aiptaisa more than 1' into the tank.

I plan on getting one for personal use, Tank/Survival kit, as it has some good potentials to be in a kit.

If the club thinks it's a good tool, and the board agrees, I see no other reason holding us back from purchasing.

I am really intrigued to see if this has the potential to cut certain corals into frags, or used to trim say diseased areas off a frag.... We will need to do some testing, if it does, that would be paramount.

Kinda like a magnifying glass to ants.  So wrong, but you can't stop, and can't turn away.  This was definitely brainstormed while drinking, I know it!
