I just picked up some pickle buckets from Firehouse to use for water changes. They still smell like pickles, what’s the best way to clean them out? Will the smell even matter as long as I rinse them well?

imo
the smell is coming out of the plastic. if you wanted to get rid of it use hot water to cause the plastic to expand and flush the residual brine solution from the plastic. as mentioned the brine is food grade salt and should cause no problems going forward. we use cucumbers which have been blanched as a vegetable food source for fish with no issues. i am sure there is a reference for pickles that lists the possible ingredients of the pickling compound if you wanted to be sure.

Here is the ingredient list:
FRESH CUCUMBERS, WATER, SALT, DISTILLED VINEGAR, CALCIUM CHLORIDE, NATURAL SPICES AND FLAVORINGS, 1/10TH PERCENT SODIUM BENZOATE AS A PRESERVATIVE, EDTA (PRESERVES FRESHNESS), TURMERIC (FOR COLOR).

I think EDTA would be the only thing i would not pour into the tank in quantity. I would believe that the amount used has been consumed/neutralized by the packaging/storage process.

Thank you for the insight. I'm soaking them in hot water now and will let them air out good before using.

I used those same buckets and had no issues. Just rinsed them out a couple times, wiped down with vinegar and rinsed again.
