We close on a new home end of September. Looking forward to sharing the build here with everyone. This is the before picture.
-
Awesome find! That space should be perfect. Looking forward to seeing the new shop come to life.

I haven’t been updating because not to much to show. We have been working on the main living area.
Here is a picture of the filtration room floor that went in today.
-
Good to see progress Brian. Hope the remodel goes well across the board. Epoxy floor finish? Am sure you will be glad to see the back of this move and rebuild. Look forward to seeing the new shop and showroom.
Jim
-
Can’t wait to see the finished showroom. 👍🏻
-
Thank you :)
Yes Epoxy floor from your1dayfloor.com
They did my garage as well. This is the 3rd floor they have done for me. Highly recommend them.
-
Looking great Brian! Love the floor
-
First of four tanks built. This one is sump and I will add a couple dividers to it.
-
did you build it yourself?
-
I am having them built.
-
That's why he is called Lazy !!!! :) :) :)
-
Haha that’s right
-
Actually that shocks me..... when it comes to his tanks, he is normally far from lazy. But then rebuilding his whole room and moving is a heck of an undertaking.
Do you have a floor plan of the new Coral House?
-
I don’t yet have a floor plan but here are tank sizes
Sump/refugium 96” x 24” x 16”
3 frag tanks 93” x 28” x 14”
-
Brian, I think you should set up a small “show tank”. That would give your customers a glimpse of the possibilities they can achieve as well as showcase your expertise in this hobby. Just a thought, cuz I know I’d love to see it!
-
+1 on the small display tank.
-
I wouldn’t mind doing a display tank. It probranly won’t happen for a year or so. We have been working every day since 8/15 on home improvements. First on our current home and now the new one. Since closing 3 weeks ago we have accomplished a lot but lots more to do. Pretty much gutted the entire house. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to start on the coral house build due to the main living area work. I did get to remove a wall to extend the basement an extra 5 foot into some unfinished space. It was a second rear entrance that led down a hallway into the utility room. With this wall gone it opens directly to the main showroom. I also had to relocate the door on the right to the back of the room for access to filtration/utility room.
-
Here is a picture of the family room/ kitchen. The kitchen was in the back right corner. There were walls between it and the family room that we tore out. There was lots of plumbing, ducting and electrical in those walls to relocate. I had to enlist some help from a electrician. but we did everything else ourself.
-
Wow, an entire gut job.....that is alot of work. I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.
-
Floor is about finished. Tanks are built. Making some progress
-
New main leg installed. This runs from the main electrical box to this sub box in filtration room.
-
Stick your tongue on that to see if it’s live : )
-
400 amp service?
That will power up a lot of Christmas lights!
-
It is 90 amp to the filtration room. Here is a couple more pics with floor in and painting complete.
-
Looking very nice Brian.

Moving fast. Looks fantastic!

Are those porcelain tile that look like wood, vinyl plank, or real wood floors? I’m considering the porcelain that looks like wood for a room expansion.
-
It is a vinyl plank. Lifeproof is the brand from Home Depot
-
I have the house far enough along that I can finally start working on Lazys Coral House. I will try to put up daily updates as I hope things will move quickly. First up are 4 stands for the tanks. All roughly 8’ each. 3 frag tanks and 1 shared sump/refugium. Stands will be 2x4 framed, skinned in paint grade 1/4” plywood. Top 1/2” plywood with a layer of gray 3/16 pvc board.

cant wait to throw my money at you. lol

Glad to hear I will still have a few customers left after being closed for 4 months
Got all four stands built and skinned. They are ready for install. I will build the doors, paint and trim them out later.
Next step is to position the tanks to determine the final location and clean out the utility room so I have some space to work over the next week.

Are you getting any sleep Brian?

Looking great!
-
Wow!! Can't wait to see the finished product! Will definitely have to pay you a visit after I get my new tank up and running.
-
4 months in this hobby is 4 days in any other. Can’t wait to check out your goods :be happy:
-
Will you continue to sell qtd fish?
-
Brian, great progress, as the others have said I can't wait to see it all up and running again. You have a 'bunch of good customers' waiting for you, your service, expertise and goods are top notch. We are grateful to have you in our immediate area for this fun hobby. Keep us posted on your progress.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your entire family!
Cheers Rick
-
Thank you all and hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving.
I may do fish again at some point but it isn’t in the intial build plan.
-
Painted the stands and positioned them in the room. Also put that baffles in the sump. Tomorrow hope to get the tanks and sump drilled and overflows installed.
If anyone happens to be available Friday 11/30 at noon to help me tear down systems at old house let me know. Thanks
-
Wow, that looks amazing, can’t wait to see them filled!
-
Looking good Brian, can’t wait till you open.
-
Today I installed the tanks on the stands, the overflows and bulkheads for the drains. Added dividers in sump. Tomorrow the plumbing.
-
wow that is one clean fish room
-
Thanks :)
-
Lazy, the word in the English Dictionary to best describe your level of detail is - - - 'Insane'. Man Love the concept, attention to detail and level of passion- I'm really stoked to see this set up running and growing some amazing corals that may end up in my tank. You may need to have a 'Tech Juinkie Day' as your Official - ssshhhh quite opener - then open to the public!
Cheers! Rick
-
Thank you Rick for the kind words :)
-
Looks like a lot more open space which is nice and floors and tanks look great can’t wait to see it all in person.
-
Thanks Eddie.
Did the overflow plumbing today. Hope to get the returns done tomorrow.
-
Return plumbing is complete. All three tanks are fed by both pumps. That way if one pump fails the system will continue to operate.
Tomorrow’s goal is to add acrylic center brace to each tank, install ro system and begin filling tanks.
-
wow that is one clean set up
-
question. does the drain from your sump have a check valve. i would hate to see the sewer or storm backup into your system?
-
Thanks :) drain has a ball valve on it.
-
Are the neptune valves for flow control or to monitor flow? what are the return pumps? what are the plans for the different compartments of the sump? sorry for all the questions buy I am sure everyone would like to know. You really do have a great attention for detail.
Jeff
-
They are flow monitors. It can detect gph going through pipe and text if reduced. The return pumps are apex cor20.
The first chamber where water comes in will have macro algae. 2nd chamber for skimmer, 3rd live rock and last one for return pumps, auto top off, and heaters. I think per Rick’s suggestion for Ohio Reef I will have an open house before I open for those that want a behind the scene tour
-
Better hire a traffic cop.

Brian, please include me in the invitation. I am really interested in your wizardry. It obviously breeds success!

Fleck feel free to give me a call next week. (After Monday; that’s when we close and I have to be out of house). Things should be winding down then.
I will post up an open house in a couple weeks. Anyone that wants to come from Ohio Reef is welcome.
1 tank and sump is full. Halfway full on tank 2 and tank 3 is still dry. . ro/di is working overtime. Cranked the pressure up 100psi. Estimating tomorrow late afternoon all should be full and online. Added rock, a bunch of fish and anemone to sump. Plan to have everything moved in by Friday.
Eddie (gemcitydoor), Jeff (jjoss99), my son and I are planning to tear down old system on Friday. Wonder what I will find in sump. It has been setup undisturbed for 8 years now. I bet it has 3” of silt on bottom. It is probrably where most of the filtration is happening.
-
Brain that is looking totally amazing but it’s you so why wouldn’t it be lol. Can’t wait to come check it out.
-
That is a massive and great looking sump and plumbing job. Very convenient as well. I do have to ask, with all of your success with the ancient sump you were previously using, why didn’t you incorporate that into the new system? Do you think it got too stirred up to be of any use??
-
Thanks Jesse and Matt.
Jesse the silt and detritus in the sump is probrably great filtration but I don’t know for sure. It would probrably take some experimentation to figure out if it is a benefit or deficit. I have been swishing the rock in saltwater to remove silt and than putting it in the new sump. I always love your questions. You would be great on a project team like BRS reef certinity or fantasy series
-
It has been a tuff 24 hours. Last night from 8:30pm to 6am this morning my son and I brought all the livestock to the new house. Then from noon - 4pm we pulled out all 9 tanks and stands. It went much quicker then I thought, thanks to the help of Jeff and Eddie and his father. Glad that is behind me.
Plan for tomorrow is to pull the lights down, repair and paint the wall and ceiling.
-
You and your wife are going to need a vacation when the move is complete and the other house is in someone else’s hands.
-
Sad to see the store emptied out but I can’t wait to see the new place thriving.
-
Glad we Could help brian hopefully the hardest stuff is behind you and on to the next chapter.
-
Hey where are the updates since the move!!!!
Jeff
-
There isn’t to much to show right now. Mainly have been unpacking boxes, deciding what to keep and what goes. Also doing some organizing. Here is what is on the agenda next
Install a utility sink
Install a workstation area for making frags
Build frag racks
Run electric from sub-panel
Install skimmer
Install apex
Add a center acrylic support in sump
Install dosing pumps
Build light racks
-
Since I don’t have any updates to show right now. Here is before/after pics of the main living area. We pulled out a couple walls around the kitchen, did lots of electrical, lighting, plumbing and drywall. Then new kitchen cabinets, paint and flooring. It took me a month to do this area. I still haven’t installed the hood above the stove top. These pictures are a bit old from before we moved in except the last one. First pic is the before.
-
Wow - You rocked that kitchen rebuild - looks great! Love the open concept, floor looks great and the cabinets - Baaaazing!
-
Damn, that looks really nice. Very nice work
-
LOVE it, looks like a new house. Great job!
-
Thanks all. It has been a lot of work but totally worth it.
-
That is absolutely beautiful Brian. I love how you opened it up. Very clean look.
-
Thanks Jesse
Got some work done yesterday and this evening. Built the testing bench and added cabinets to hold sink. This is in the filtration room. Tomorrow’s plan is to install the sink and faucet. Will be nice to have running water. I haven’t had that for a couple months.
-
nice to see it coming along.
-
Got the sink installed today. Nice to have running water again.
-
It’s amazing how we take the simple things for granted until you don’t have them.
-
That is so true!
-
Looking great Lazy! both on the house and the new shop! congrats and happy new year!
-
Thank you.
I am ready to build the light racks. I was hoping to make a rectangle of angle aluminum painted black and mount the lights directly to it. Then use thin wire rope to hang tack from ceiling. Does anyone know a good place for me to purchase the aluminum. I checked Lowe’s and menards and they were either to thick, thin or not long enough. Also should I weld it together? I haven’t ever welded anything and don’t have a welder but always up for a new tool and skill. Let me know if anyone has experience on sourcing the metal or can help with fabrication.
Got the skimmer installed today
-
I bought my tank framing materials from online metals. Com. Even after shipping they were cheaper then buying local by quite a bit. My boss can weld really well and might do it for you for a dinner out certificate. Aluminum is harder to weld then steel unless you know what you are doing.
Jeff
-
try mcmastercarr they will have it.
-
I used 7/8 unistrut painted it black Homedepot $20 10’ its galvanized though can bolt it together with spring nuts and flat brackets pretty easy. I think it turned out ok
-
Could always try alro, That’s where we buy all of our aluminum extrusion for work.

That looks great Ryan. Did you paint it or did it come black?

Looks like this is the place I need to visit. I will head out there early this week. Thank you!
-
I painted can of primer and black. They don’t sell it in colors
-
Look at metal supermarket. There is a location right in your backyard (next to UD) and you can buy off the shelf. Great group and great prices. You can walk through their warehouse to see what they offer and the crew loves to talk projects.

Thank you Fleck, I will check them out as well. Things are stalled as of right now. A lot of the places are closed by the time I get off work.
-
I’m still on the hunt for some metal. I checked Home Depot and they have what would work but not long enough pieces. All these metal stores are closed by the time I get off work. Does anyone know a place that is open on Saturday’s
-
You might be able to get a metal fabricator to keep an appointment after hours or on a Saturday. It might help to see what you need too. Could be someone with a more flexible schedule could pick it up for you. Frustrating for sure.
-
If you was building it with regular iron I could weld and fabricate it for you.
-
Do you know what you want Lazy? I could have our salesman quote it. We get much better pricing than the web site shows.
-
Thanks Jim and Ricardo.
Paul Unfortunately I don’t know what I want yet. Well I do but not sure what it is called until I can see the look, feel the strength etc..
It needs to be 8’ long, ability to run the power cord inside to hide it. Rigid enough that one end can attach to wall and other end can attach by a wire rope to ceiling with no other supports from one end to the other. Smaller the better as far as thickness and size of the channel
-
Have you looked at uni-strut. calbright sells stainless$$$ or you could buy coated unitstrut . they sell rubber covers and endcaps for it. all types any it is very sturdy.
-
Maybe not the look you want but black pipe ( gas line) would meet those criteria.
-
The unistrut comes in several thickness 7/8” and 1 5/8” with 10’ and even 20’ lengths. You can also get it slotted or unslotted. I think the unslotted would look the best. You could drill holes in it and run your wiring in the channel.
They also have a large variety of angles and brackets. We use it a bunch in the electrical industry and often times to hang lights. I can get it from any of our local distributors. PM me if you have any interest in it and I can send you a catalog and get pricing for you.
-
Unistrut would likely work and probrably be the final solution but I need to see it in person before purchasing. I see lots of options online to purchase many products that could be good solutions but without first seeing it I am not able to tell. Jimm I would like a square and light weight product
-
I have a 5’ section here at my house if you would like it.
-
Thanks for the offer but I will need 8’ pieces although coming to check it out may be a good idea then if it works I can order it online.
-
ill bring some home for you if you want.
-
I have 10’ sections
-
That would be awesome! Let me know when I can come by and check out. Thank you
-
ill check stock and let you know Monday
-
I was able to get away today to visit a couple metal shops. I decided to go with 1/16” angle aluminum. I would have preferred 1/8” but they didn’t have enough in stock. The unistrut felt like overkill. It was heavy and would have been hard to work with. Tomorrow is a busy day so may not get around to the build until Sunday but with Monday off I really hope to have at least one rack built and installed by eod Monday.
-
I got the light racks built today. Just need to mount the lights. Thank you Jeff for coming over and helping today.
-
Very nice. Are the lights going to sit in the channel of the rack?
-
From underneath. I wish they could have went inside but the led's come right to the edge of the housing. I also wanted the option to be able to turn them in the other direction if I needed more light. The cords go inside. Here is pic with one of them mounted
-
I’m chomping at the bit to get my hands on some acros
-
Looks really nice Brian, amazing amount of work you have put into this project.
-
Looks great. Excited to shop here for my first time ^-^.
-
Thank you all, it won't be long now. 2-3 weeks and I will be back open.
-
Great to hear Brian! I’m looking forward to it. BTW-What lights will you be using?
-
You know me, I love the ocean revive lights :)

You know me, I love the ocean revive lights :)
You bought new Ocean Revives??
-
I am using 12 total and I think 3-4 of them are new, the rest are from my old system. Why do you ask?
-
Well, I thought you were going with all new lighting for some reason. Maybe because you sold those SO26’s. It would have been a testament to the Ocean Revives (and probably still is considering you’re using what has worked) had you just bought new ones.
-
I sold the others because some of the blue leds needed replaced. It was easier and quicker to replace the entire fixiture for a new one and write off as a business expense rather than replace a few individual leds in each
-
Hey Brian I’m curious, were you able to keep most of you live stock alive through the transfer and build? If so my hats off to and who ever helped you. The logistics of it all would scare the crap out of me!
-
I didn’t loose corals in the move which consisted of LPS and Softies. However for a month leading up to the move (sept/oct) while the new house was under construction I had issues with and lost quite a bit of sps. I was to busy at that time to troubleshoot. Fortunately Jeff (jjoos99) offered to host them. They have been with him since end of October. I plan to pick them back up over the next couple weeks. I was lucky and am extremely thankful to have someone with his reefkeeping skill to care for them over the past 3 months. I got to visit with him sometime back and was super impressed with how they look and how he cared for them like they were his own.
The actual move was fairly easy. I didn’t reuse anything from the old system other then the live rock. The tanks and equipment were new and setup with water and live rock a couple days prior. The coral move happened in a few hours. Within a couple days after the move I noticed immediate improvement in coral health and carbonate uptake. The old system was neglected and there was likely a water chemistry issue due to my lack of attention.
Had I had to tear down and setup same gear/tanks it would have been a nightmare. The planning began 3 months prior so I had quite a bit of time to figure out what I was going to do.
On another note, I have the first order of Aussie and Belize corals coming in tomorrow.
If anyone has decent size sps or euphyllia colonies for sale text me pics/price
-
:alas: Thanks for the kind words. I'm just glad that I was able to turn them around. Regrettably I did loose several of yours and mine while fighting the increased alkalinity demand. Doubling the load of corals put quite a demand on trying to keep up with the alk levels. Just when I thought that I had my co2 reactor set right the corals would become happy and everything would start growing more and my levels would drop again. There for a while I had quite the alk. see saw.
You know that is what is great about this hobby if someone needs a helping hand we are all there to help with what ever it takes.
Jeff
-
Today was a great day. Got the electrical complete. Ran 3, 20 amp circuits, installed under tank power and wired all the light racks. Next up i will either build the frag racks or install the components. Apex, dosers, fluid monitoring modules, break out boxes, leak detectors, probes etc..
-
Looking very nice Brian. That is awesome of Jeff to help you out during your busy time with the move.
-
Looks great Brian! Where have you had the big daddy Emporer and the Queen?
-
Very nice Brian - Are you still planning on having a 'Tech Talk Day Opening' for the club members?
-
Rick how about feb 9 for the tech day/ Ohio Reef exclusive. If there isn’t a club meeting yet for feb we can make it into that. Jesse the emperor is in the middle tank. I lost the queen angel about eight months ago due to some unknown illness. It hid for about two weeks and then turned up dead. Thanks Matt; Jeff is an awesome dude I fell very greatfull for his help

Thank you For having us.
-
I spent 4-8 hours a day for past week cleaning up the corals. What a PIA. Every coral got inspected. Any dead parts cut off, algae removed and any other imperfection dealt with, re-plugged/mounted. That was a lot of work but dang it looks good. Now I just need everything to grow. Alk consumption is at an all time low in 10 years. Hopefully we will have lift off soon!
-
Will you still be open this Saturday? If so what times!?
-
Unfortunatley I need to delay the opening. I Thought for sure I would finish completing what I needed to open but my week didn’t go as planned. Sorry
-
System has a case of the uglies. Two much new surface area. All the new frag racks and plugs. Yuck! Being a OCD person makes this stage of new builds very unpleasant. The corals don’t like all the chaos going on from the surface area wars. Been so many years since I have had to deal with this mess. :th_surrender: :Tank:

Ah. Browns are ugly but nothing a good troop of snails can’t handle. Dino’s are the worst. Very time consuming siphoning them daily. I’ve finally beat them back for now.

We tried to get you to bottle your secret sauce back at the other place!! :)

Haha wish I had a bottle of that now
-
I got my triton results back. Chromium was high. Here is the naritive from the test.
Your Chromium levels are dangerously high.
Check for possible contamination source. To assist you in finding the source of error, we have listed the most common chromium sources (sorted in descending order of frequency):
1. Trace element overdose / contamination
2. Metals near or in the aquarium (as rusty clamps or screws)
3. Contaminated salts
-
I have 2 mp40 magnets swollen, rusted and split. Dang it!
-
Here are results

-
Hopefully you have found the answer Brian. Just cleaned my MP40's, will be checking them regularly.
-
Brian, that is a stunning revelation that I am sure you didn’t expect! Glad you found your issue though.
Am I the only one that is dumbfounded that this could happen to a piece of equipment that is as expensive as the MP40’s are?!? I don’t care how old they are. This should never be a possibility!

There are many a stories about this on the forums.
I had the same thing happen to the magnet on my IM grazer. Fortunately I was only dealing with a 30 gallon tank.

Finally got to see the new set up, very nice and the work you and your wife did on your house was beautiful.
-
Thank you :)
-
Looks very nice indeed, Brian :)
-
Thank you
I sent test water to both ATI and triton. Can’t believe how fast the ATI results came back. Just three days. I’m guessing it’ll be three weeks by the time I get the triton results back. Will be interesting to see if there’s any differences. ATI results came back great no chromium.
-
Here’s triton results. This test was sent the same day as ati. I actually had both triton and ati vials in hand at same time when filling with water.
-
Video update.
https://youtu.be/RqhZXNsC7fE
I just had my floor ground for it to be level, I did not see any Ill effects on the tank. it is basically just rock flying in the air, cover the tanks with plastic and limit surface water movement.
-
Thanks to Jeff everything will be ready by Saturday to have the floor installed.
He came over this evening and we tore a tank down and moved it to the utility room so it can be temporally tied into sump. It will live there for a few days holding all the LPS, Softies and Anemones. Another tanks worth of corals went home with Jeff. That leaves me with sps and clam tank. I pulled the skimmer out of the sump to make room for those. It sure was a lot easier than I expected. Having friends to lean on is a great feeling. Thank you jjoos99!
-
Giant frag sale now going on.
All proceeds go to ME!! Dont tell Lazy!!
Jeff
-
Seriously everyone
Brian stock is still fantastic looking, a few problem pieces here and there but overall they will make great additions to your tanks when he gets back open. His whole ordeal has been quite devastating to his sps stock. What use to be 2 tanks full of sps has been reduced to maybe 1/2 tank. The pieces he does have are amazing looking as always. If we all can learn something from all of his pitfalls is that even the best of the best reefkeepers can experience troubles and system failures. Thing is you just have to spend the time (sometimes money) and keep working at it.

Thanks Jeff for kind words and words of wisdom. It has been challenging, and humbling. Even though I haven’t found the issue I have learned some things in the process.
Here is where things stand today. Two tanks are dry and one is setup in the utility room. All the furniture and belongings either wrapped in plastic or moved. Even curtains had to come down
-
Brian, I know you’ll keep pushing forward. Stay the course. One of the things I admire the most about you is that when you hit an obstacle, you go all out to correct it. It’s a lot of work, but it’s going to be fantastic AND more useful in the long run!
-
Thank you!

Flooring is going down. A bit nervous with the chemical smell and tanks on other side of wall.

Looks great! Do they put some kind of top coat on it after the texture?
-
Nice! That's a big difference in a little time!
-
Thank you. Yes it has a clear coat over it. Here is the finished product. Almost dry. Couple more hours and I can walk on it. Tomorrow I can start putting tanks back
-
Wow, that really looks good. Is it forgiving regarding imperfections in the original cement floor? I may have to do this to my basement.
-
Thank you: The first step they do is resurface the floor by diamond grinding or shot blasting. Then they repair any damaged area or cracks.
-
Would love to be able to do this in my hangar or garage

Brian,
The floor looks great - Can you bring me up to speed on what happened to the floor to cause this rework? I have been reading through the post but do not see what caused you to pull tanks and redo this?
Cheers Rick

I was going to ask the same question Rick.

I never really like the floor but I got some water under it. We pulled up the affected areas to dry and was going to put it back down. But figured it would probrably happen again so we decided to go this route instead. There is info on the water spill in the video I posted on June 20 if you have interest in hearing about the cause
-
Wow. I have not on this site in a long time, maybe a year or so. However, I stumbled upon this thread. I absolutely love what you have built here, what a wonderful model. Sorry to see you have had a couple of bumps along the road.
-
Thanks Rob.

The Trident is installed and has performed its first test. The entire installation only took 15 minutes. I delayed setting this up for a couple weeks thinking it was going to be difficult. It wasn’t. Basically one line drops in sump and the other line goes to a waste container. That’s it aside from plugging it into the apex 1link port. Couldn’t be any easier. I have to wait 48 hours before I can run the calibration task. For now the first test came up with Alk 8.92 vs 9.30 on salifert, Calcium 296 vs 450 on Sailfert and Mag 1501 vs 1425 on sailfert. We will see where it goes in a couple days after calibration
-
Acros are looking great as well as most other corals. Nice to start sharing some coral pics again
-
Looking good. color and p/e are doing real well. Love the hairy green acro!!
Jeff
-
Awesome, man! So glad to see things looking like the Lazy’s of old! Can’t wait to come see the shop!
-
Looking good Brian.
-
Colors are looking great!
-
Looking good Brian. What have you learned thru the problem?
-
Thanks all. Jesse unfortunately I haven’t learned anything new about the issue. Having torn down the tanks twice to have the floor installed caused 2 back to back 80% + water changes.
-
I ran the calibration today with Neptune system trident calibration fluid. It fixed the low calcium reading. Mag pretty much stayed the same which was accurate before calibration. Alk was good before the calibration and out of range by .50 dkh after the calibration. I tested the calibration fluid with my sailfert and Hannah test kits. Calcium was spot on as well as mag however alk was way off which made sense based on the post calibration results. I made my own calibration fluid and tried it again. Now it is spot on!
-
lazy does the trident work like the old alk monitor you had in the alk test?
if so want to work on a reagent fluid?
-
It is different in that the kh guardian used ph probe and acid. Trident does titration via color meter. Basically the same as sailfert or other box test kit
Here is a few screen shots of some of the views it displays in the app. There is also alerting that can be done based on values and dosing. The dosing is nice in that you can give it a set value to never dose more or less then a configured amount in 24 hour period for safety
-
Are you going to let it control your dosing or just monitor?
Jeff
-
I don’t think I will ever let it dose but as I gain confidence I will probably makes adjustments to the dosing amount and schedule based off testing results.
-
Yea, I used the Trident for 1.5 months...it really allows you to keep your pulse on the tank! After the first round of reagents ran low, I decided it was overkill for my tank and sold it for what I put into it (could have gotten more with the crazy scarcity). I don't regret using it it and found it enlightening, and should be perfect for your application, Brian. Just be warned that my Ca shot up as the reagent got low. Others have reported something similar, and likely due to sucking air.
I agree with you on being wary of auto dosing, especially after the Ca experience. That said, Neptune did a nice job of putting safeguards in for auto-dosing. I just like to observe and adjust dosing myself.
-
Good feedback Rick. I have also seen the issues reported with calcium drifting up when reagent gets low. They are still speculating air is getting in it but no official word from Neptune systems yet. If I see it happen I won’t get to excited. I have to say I am really impressed. For their first edition it is a solid product so far. If it continues to operate like it has I am super impressed. The difference in quality, compared to the kh monitor is night and day in every aspect. It is reading exactly the same as what I am getting on all my test now.
Tonight’s test on Hannah checker for alk was 9.3 trident 9.38
Calcium sailfert 430-440, trident 432
Mag sailfert 1380, trident 1388
-
Everything seems to be back to normal. Never figured out the issue. Wish I did but glad corals are healthy, colorful and growing again. Prepping for reopening in a couple weeks.
-
Looks great! Can’t wait to get back to my weekly Lazy’s treks!
-
Oh yeah! I hope you have shipping materials ready as well as a complete list!
-
Gonna bring my sunglasses next visit. Everything looks amazing.
Jeff
-
Those are amazing!
-
So glad you powered through your issues, Brian. Few would be so persistent!
My MP40 magnet split very slightly after a year and I had never used acid or vinegar on it. It's just a design flaw. Thankfully they replaced my wet side free of charge.
-
thank you. Glad they took care of you as well

A few system updates
Alk/Ca consumption have been slowly climbing. It was at an all time low mid Feb at 38ml per day and is at 230ml now. Happy with that but hoping to achieve 350ml range by April.
I have been doing a flucanzole treatment because I had some algae that was bottoming out my nitrates. When I added sodium nitrate the algae would grow then consume the nitrate again. Vicious cycle. The flucanzole has knocked out most of the algae letting the nitrates climb back up to a good level again and acros are showing their appreciation with some fancy colors. I added a second dose this evening. Cheato has been chilling in 5g bucket while it does its magic.
I added a few new corals from Toby, Brian H, Tim, Jim H, Andy, Ricardo and a couple other reefing friends from the swap. Mainly softies and cyphestrea.
Astrena Starfish! - has anyone had them eat coral. Maybe due to the flucanzole treatment and taking away their food source has caused them to much on my coral! I noticed some chalices looked like they were munched on. Starting checking tank at night and caught them eating zoa frag. I think they have picked on some of my chalices and Favia as well. I will have to order a couple of harlequin shrimp for each tank this week.
Posts without pictures are boring so here is a dragon lady bounce.
-
Added a Moorish Idol and Powder Blue Tang. They are a bit thin coming out of Quarntine. Hopefully they fatten up over next few months with heavy feedings.
Well my moorish idol is not well. I am not sure what is going on. Not eating, heavy breathing and lathergic. No sign of any injury so not sure what’s going on. After five years with me it is going to be a tuff loss..... As I write this I just remembered something. I aded last week two pipefish. Maybe they brought something in
-
What tank is that with the blue background?
-
What tank is that with the blue background?
I think that’s an old video of Brian’s if I remember correctly.
-
Yes sir it is a old video from back in 2014.
-
I think I saw the old post...I just caught up, sorry to hear about the idol... Hope he pulls through.
-
Yes sir it is a old video from back in 2014. Looking at my yellow tang he is also breathing a little heavy and being more skittish than normal. Having been almost fanatical about quarantine it bothers me that I didn’t know this and made bone head mistake. Makes it so much worse that I caused the issue. Ugh!
I’m sorry. We’ve all been there Brian. Hopefully it’s not too late to intervene and nurse them back to health.
-
If you need to treat them In my qt tank you are welcome to. Sure dont want to put them in with your current qt tank's fish. I can have it ready tomorrow.
Jeff
-
Thanks Jeff for offer. He passed tonight. That happened really quickly. Time will tell if it was a communicable disease from the pipefish or just old age with the idol
I had it for 6 years and it was probably a couple years old when I got it based on size so neat guess is 8 years old. Everywhere I read it says average lifespan in wild is 2-4 years. That seems really really low but I want to believe it. Lol
-
Sorry about the loss, funny how a fish can become part of the family. He was a staple of Lazys coral house for sure. I love the personality of the idols and they are such a cool looking fish.
Jeff
-
If we tear down our tank next year i will keep you in mind for my idol
-
Thank you Justin!
How is your idol doing Jeff?
-
Thank you Justin!
How is your idol doing Jeff?
Mine is doing well. I moved him from the frag system into the display tank while the tangs and angel are in the qt tank. Now when I put the tangs and angel into the display the idol will have seniority:) If only it would stay that way. If he gets bullied the tangs might have to find a new home. None of the tangs have the personality the idol has.
Jeff

Glad it is doing well. They are such docile fish with great personality.
on another subject, Alk and Calcium dosing has finally synced up. Dosing 316ml per day. Nice to have things growing again.
-

After five years with me it is going to be a tuff loss..... As I write this I just remembered something. I aded last week two pipefish. I didn’t know they could carry fish disease. I thought of them as an invert like a shrimp. Well that sucks
No other fish ever came down with anything. Still not sure why it died. I want to believe old age. Funny thing, I still have the pipefish. It is so cool and graceful. For the first couple months I was hatching brineshrimp and feeding that each day. Then once summer came I stopped and haven't feed since probably early March. Not sure what it eats, hasn't seem to get any thinner so it must be getting pods.
Here is an older video of it from back in December. It still looks same today

Very cool fish
-
Not a lot to share. Things are doing pretty well. I added a Nero 5 in place of a 3k gyre in sps tank. A couple weeks ago the pump was stopped and my pipefish was stuck inside of it. I pulled it out. Skin was in rough shape and eye looked missing and it wasn’t able to swim just floated upside down but was alive. Thought it was a goner. It is now completely healed, eye is fine and it is aggressively spending its day hunting pods. Crazy
Well nothing else to post so here is some screen shots of apex. Trident after a year now is still doing great. I love it!
The dip on many of charts from 11/26 was water change day
-
Did you have the pump guard on the back of the nero5? So far that is the only bad comments about the neros is the early ones not coming with fish guards. I really like the ones I bought. Have actually considered selling my mp40s and replacing them with the neros.
Jeff

Yes I have it installed. The pipefish is so small it went right through it. I like it as well. It has some good. I haven’t yet hooked it up to WiFi to see what features it has. I wish it was able to be angled
