New Sun Coral! Big Pics!
« on: May 31, 2009, 18:45:57 »
Picked up some Sun Coral yesterday. Lots of people think its boring (me included), but the wife wanted it. After seeing it open, its really stunning. I'm glad I have it. I really like it now. Feeding them will be a pain in the rear, but I think it will be worth it.

Big thanks t Dwayne and Justin from Aquatic Specialist in Troy.

Here it is opening up after tempting it with some frozen rotifers. You can se a pod crawling on one of them. Alot more new starts than I noticed in the shop.

A few more. First one is a 25 second exposure with a LED lit from above.

Second pic is with half the lights on.

Sun Corals are really beautiful. But i agree a pain in the but because of the feedings. I was able to keep them thriving by spot feeding with one of these 3 times a week.

Another thing you can try is cutting the bottom off a plastic water bottle and put it over the sun coral then drop the frozen food in the bottle and put the lid on. As it melts it will slowly fall onto the polyps.

BTW: Great Pictures
Good Luck

I see why they are called sun corals! I think they are beautiful if you ask me. Are they hard to care for?

They are described as Moderate, or Expert most places that sell them. I think it is an easy coral. Its not photsynthetic, so it requires feeding, where most can get by filter feeding, and light.

So it depends on how much time you have for your tank. I devote an hour a day.

Cool thanks I will have to keep my eyes open for some of that. I don't have much in my tank but some big rocks and a few small things like zoanthids and I don't think they can die. Only an hour a day? That don't seem too bad, I always heard these tanks were so much work.

Dendrophyllia's are similar in color & structure, but they only need to be fed about 3x per week (depending on their diet.)  They have a larger polyp as well, so it looks neat.

Very nice.  I saw that piece at Aquatic Specialists last week.  I was tempted...  :)    In the past I've had orange, yellow and black suncoral.  I only have a few orange right now.
