Upgrading from a 120 to a 180. I've always wanted a 6' tank but never had the room. Recently moved into a new house so of course time to upgrade, lol. I bought the 180 and stand off of a fellow reefer. The 180 has never had water in it. I had a friend of mine build me a canopy and refinish the stand. We went with a furniture quality stand and canopy. Turned out excellent. The front of the canopy lifts up to access lighting and for easy coral/live rock placement. Most likely wont get wet until spring. I have alot to do. Sump is going in my basement.

I would do the same upgrade if I was going to move. Looks really clean. That canopy has be pretty heavy!

The canopy is really light. If it wasn't so long I'd be able to take it off my self. The whole front opens up with a 4ft piano hinge on top. I love it the way it turned out. Now have to figure out plumbing... I have a reeflo barracuda pump and a giant reef octopus skimmer. Still trying to decide on sump. I have a 150g rubbermaid tote and a 150g glass tank sectioned sump

Got the skimmer all cleaned up. Reef octopus extreme 300. This thing is huge. It has a 10" collection cup.

That’s an old school Skimmer right there. They don’t make them like that anymore. It’s built like a tank with high-quality acrylic. I have the exact same model, it’s been running sense 2008.

You still have the psk-2500 pumps in yours? 1 of mine is a little temperamental. Probably going to buy a replacement in case it quits.

I replaced mine with a single water blaster pinwheel skimmer pump. Blocked the other hole. They are expensive but extraordinary pumps.

+1 on the bubble blaster pump. I believe the 5000 is the pump you want.

Worked on the canopy a bit. Mounted my 4' reefbreeder led light fixture. I'm going to add a two 60" T5 bulbs using a BRS retro kit. I also installed a couple of gas struts to hold the canopy up. Not much but its forward progress.

That strut idea is really cool. Mine hinges up that way and I have always just used a piece of wood as a prop rod. Have always been paranoid of knocking the rod out and the hood slamming down onto my head.
It is amazing how much just 2 t5s will help light your tank. I have 2 on my 220 and it fills in all the shadow areas that the leds seem to cause. Well worth the extra money and electricity.

Yea I'll have to coat the struts with grease to try to prevent rust. But they were only 18 for the pair on Amazon.

Well I decided to go a different route with the canopy. I just liked the open look too much. I built a floating canopy instead. I think it looks slick. I also mounted my led lights.

Well switching up my lighting... I am going back to T5s.. I loved my t5 setup on my 90. Switched to LEDs when I got my 120 grew coral but nothing like my T5s did. I kinda like the simplicity of them.. set it and forget it. I just got a 60" ATI 8 bulb fixture.

Did a little plumbing yesterday.. got the return done. 1.5" hard plumbed to a ture union check valve, stepped up to a 2" ball valve, 1.5" up through the floor, 1.5" Y to dual 1" lines to each overflow using soft line. Also added a manifold for the future with two 1" ball valves

so i am curious about:
how do you disconnect the pump if needed?
how are you finishing the walls?

I can disconnect the pump using the true union check valve. There is also another union right above the top 45⁰. Just beneath the floor. As far as the walls go most likely drywall or OSB.

cool i read that but couldn't see the union on the check valve. are you moving the sump out of there to do the walls?

I will be adding unions to both of my drains right below the floor as well do everything will disconnect. I can walk around the sump so there will be enough room to screw in some dry wall and slap some mud on it.. doesn't have to be finished. Its just the fish room.. or screw in some osb?

Have you considered possibility of overflow through the hole for your drain pipes when you turn return pump off?

Yes the sump is only about 1/2 full. This is the same WY my buddy ran his setup. I got the sump off of him. I will test it out when it's up and running

Freshwater test underway.. So far so good, no leaks and everything is working as expected. That jebao 20000 is an absolute monster.. I have it at 50% and there is still more flow as my old tank. At full power its literally spraying water out of my return nozzles. My only concern is the height of my drain pipe. Should I be concerned? This is how it came in the overflow kit. I killed the power and still have tons of room in my mammoth sump. I love having the sump in the basement so much cleaner looking and easy access to all equipment.

Well tank is up and running.. Picked up a pair of ORA misbar naked clowns and away we are cycling. I am using Fritz turbo start 900 with a bottle of ammonia from Dr Tims. Not 100% on the rock work but so far I'm digging it.

Well just picked up my first fish for the 180.. I set up a 20L for a QT tank. Picked up a cleaner shrimp, Yellow tang and a powder brown tang. They are eating flake and nori like pigs. Fingers crossed.. More fish to come.

Looking good. I think the rock work is sweet, just curious about the one piece in the center, being so close to the surface it's not going to allow much room for growth. Lots of room on the sand bed for some of those sweet LPS you grow.

love your set up and you can probably clear something up for me. I have a Bean Animal drain. I set it up with the ends of the full siphon and the open channel standpipes submerged in the sump. When re-establishing siphon after the pump is off, the air can be purged from the full siphon. In case of high water level, the open channel will be able to purge the air and become a full siphon. in your set up the drains end up above the sump liquid level. Does the length of pipe create a full siphon in the pipe, due to the length of the vertical, thus not needing to be submerged?

does your overflow restart and stabilize if you turn off the return and let the pipes drain then restart the return pump?

cool thanks! i don't use filter socks because i would have to have the ends above the surface and i thought that was a no no it is good to know that it is still an option with my build.

Powder brown tangs are under rated fish. It is beautiful!

Orange Shoulders are some of my favorite tangs. The ones I’ve had have had awesome personalities.
