Any ideas on what this may be?
« on: May 31, 2011, 00:13:19 »
I have 4 of these in total, 3 are about the size of a quarter, the 4th is about the size of a baseball...

They are pretty much purple, but the big one is brownish green. At night they completely withdraw into the rock it appears(even the big one)

I would try to take a picture of the big one but he is so far back in the tank I can't get a good angle with the camera but he is massive....

Anyone know what they are?

It is a manjo anemone. Cool looking but can be a pest.

Hmm, they have been in there since I moved the tank, they don't seem to be very pesty for me....yet lol...but I will be sure to deal with em on the move. The big one is kinda cool looking(if it is a majono) but he is different from the smaller ones quite abit, but still has the bumpy appearance in a way. (they are on small rocks of their own so I will just get rid of the rocks)

Thanks for the info, it's good to know, I have just been letting them chill cause I didn't really know what they were and they didn't seem to bother anything, my goby sits in the middle of the smaller ones all the time and just chills.

Maybe they aren't Manjo Anemones. I reread your first post and saw you said one was baseball size. I don't know if they get that big. Maybe something different

I always thought they were mojanos, but when I compare pictures from online they don't look like them in my opinion(atleast of the pics I have seen)... they look like a form of mushroom to be honest... they haven't spread in any way, they don't have stems that I can tell, and they are super thin like my other mushrooms

I will see if I can get a pic of the big one... do mojanos get bigger the longer the lights are turned on?(like all my other corals and shrooms get huge, but the aiptasia stay the same regardless if light is on or off, I didn't know if mojano do this aswell)

I guess I'll take the better safe than sorry move... I will just remove them when I switch tanks... mine aren't nearly that pretty but they also don't look as harmful or nasty as my plethora of aiptasia.

The big one kinda looks like this... but still has a mouth looking center, and the "tentacles" on mine look more like bumbs than tentacles. but about the same size and shape, he looked like the other smaller ones before he exploded into this thing(not sure when it happened but it was almost like over night I never notice how big he had gotten till just one day...

It is an elephant mushroom.  They get big.  I just tore down a guys tank yesterday that had about 10 in it.

The exterior tentacles ( for lack of a better word) looks to long for an elephant ear mushroom  :hmmmm:

Wonder if it could be a rock flower anemone ???

Kenn's picture is definitely a Mojano.   I'm not sure on BoonJob's.   I would have to side on the mushroom.

Either case, they are really not desirable.   If it is a elephant ear shroom, those things will eat your fish.

I don't think it looks like a flower anemone.  I'm wondering if maybe it's a hairy mushroom?  I know they can get very big!

Here is the big one... sorry I had to stick my camera in the back of the tank looking down, cause it's the only way I can see him as he sits between two big rocks on either side... the picture does him no justice in size, I can literally stick a beer bottle base in the center of him and he is wider than it by .5"

He looked just like the others before exploding into this one day.

I have posted this on RC and so far I have gotten the response from a long time Mushroom reefer that he thinks it is a type of "Ricordia yuma. "

Its hard to tell in the picture, but I always thought ricordia were more bumpy.  But then again what do I know!  :)

here is a pic of purple and orange ricordia yuma I found on line... I would say to date that is the closest match to style, size and looks... mine just isn't very colorful not sure why... he does go bright green but sometimes just a dull brown(probably because my water/lights suck)
