Need Zoa I.D.
« on: November 07, 2009, 21:05:13 »
Just pick up a few things today at Coral Ranch. One of which I need help with the ID.

The frag LOOKED blue in the tank but when I got home I was greeted to this color instead:

any thoughts?

Unfortunately, there's probably a billion species of zoanthids...and it's next to impossible to nail down a species name especially without knowing where they came from.

If you're looking for a name for them...you get into a fun debate.  For the higher end corals, if they have a name, they'd better have a lineage.  It's frustrating as a potential buyer when someone lists a "Superman Montipora".  You expect a bright baby blue base with screaming red polyps...and then the person gives you *their* version of the "Superman Montipora" b/c they think it looks close enough to sell it at a higher price...so you get a dull blue base with brownish red polyps.

But, there are plenty of people who say that since something *looks* like a named coral, it is that coral.  Anywho...

Nice zoa, good find  - seems to be typical of the quality that the guys at the coral ranch have to offer - great coloration
