Mixing Clown Fish
« on: October 26, 2011, 20:03:02 »
Has anyone ever mixed different species of clownfish in the same tank?  I have a pair of false percs in my 125.  I would love to get a pair of black perc clowns.  Any thoughts?

Why would you want to mix them in a tank ???   Use a blender  ( sorry, I know it's bad. I had to do it :) )

Ken a blender is just too messy!  The tank mixer just makes them go around in circles!  ;)

Thanks Dave, maybe Mike will chime in with some info!  :D

I have a huge (3" or more) tomato, a small pink skunk, and a black false perc. They all get along great.

I want another Clown, I was told you could only have one unless you buy them at the same time.   I have a Clarkii Clown.

So, someone who already has had a Clown in their tank for awhile needs to buy another and let us know the outcome .. I've had my Clarkii for about 2 years now.  I want an orange Nemo looking one.

I think that is where it gets tricky. I had a couple percs for 2 years and tried to add to Black clowns and they weren't having it. Had to get rid of the new ones. Granted my tank was only a 55g. Might be less territorial in a large tank

I have added a new clown in the past, but it was the same kind of clown,  One died and I wanted a pair so I got another but it was MUCH SMALLER than the existing one.  I've done this twice with no problems at all.  I did a longggg time ago have 2 pair of the same breed and that didn't work out so well.  I ended up removing two of them.  I've never mixed breeds which is what I would like to do.  In my 125 I have false percs with an anemone.  In my 150 I have tomato clowns with an anemone.  I do have another anemone in my spair tank that I could add to either tank and would like to get a pair of black perc clowns.  My preference would be to add them to the 125 which houses the false percs.

I had a pair of false percs in my 125 for about a year.  Added a pair of blacks that were quite a bit smaller.  They fought at first, but now they get along just fine.  Will even see one of each at night sleeping together (they have an open relationship)

When I got my 29G nanocube It came with 1 clown that has been in there for many months.  I added a very small one and they older/bigger one beat him up for about 30 mintues then all was fine.  Maybe I just got lucky.

I think this is typical behavior for them.  I've had success with this everytime I've tried it.  Soon I will be adding a "pair", I'm hoping all goes well with that.
