Moorish Idol
« on: December 11, 2013, 22:31:10 »
Anyone out there have a Moorish Idol? If so let me know any tips. I have been following this Moorish Idol Primer on RC for the past year. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=607477 Decided to give it another go after previous failed in 2011. So far so good, here is a video of it eating Nori at about the 2:30 mark.

I saw today that Changing Tide aquatics has one in.  No idea how long they've had it.....but it looks to have settled in nice so far.

Idols at very finicky fish. They are hard to get thru qt. Some won't eat, others just can't take the stress.

Never made it through QT. Couldn't get it eating good enough.

Bad news for the current one. It has a bad case of ich. Fortunately I had it in QT. I am dropping the salinity. Yesterday dropped it to 1.017 and today dropped it to 1.013. I would have dropped it to 1.009 immediately but I have live rock in the tank. Trying to slow die off as not to add Ammonia & Nitrite. It is to bad because this one is eating great and has kept a nice thick stomach. Didn't come in emaciated like most do. Unfortunately surviving low salinity and ich is going to be a stretch. They are just such sensitive fish. I'm bummed but holding on to some hope

As long as he's alive and eating there is hope. Would be awesome to see this one make it through.

Salinity at 1.009 now. The ich looks to be gone and it made it through okay. It is eating pellets now.

I found that thread from the last go. It was 2 years ago and looks like I killed it with a medication. http://www.ohioreef.com/index.php?topic=12902.0

It's good that this batch of ich didn't over stress the fish.   4-6 weeks in Hypo........stay vigilant.

garlic, garlic, and more garlic.

garlic is good to get a new fish intrested or eating with gusto, but ive noticed over doing the garlic concentration of the food quite a few of the new ones spit it out grab it again and spit it, eventually they do it a few times and loose intrest in the food, so ive noticed dont add to much garlic to the food its almostto unatural for them like what was that! my idol has found some sponge hes going on 2 weeks now and finally getting along with the purple tang his dorsal fin has healed a bit and is less frayed no long stremmer tho  :not:
