a good place for a weekend get away
« on: June 04, 2011, 22:07:39 »
I am just pondering over this question as I mill the internet so I'll just throw it out on here to see what ideas I get...What are some recommendations for a good place for a weekend get away? I don't really wanna drive more than 4-5hours...I only intend to drive ;) lol... I basically lived in the state of Tennessee and we always go back to Gatlinburg for these types of getaways(which I love, but I want this to be somewhere I haven't been before)

Water/Outdoors probably interest me the most... but I m open minded...O

I've been going to Gatlinburg since I was a child. LOVE IT ... you mean people can go other places ??? Why would they want to?

There are some great places around Lake Erie. Just depends on what you are looking for.

Yeah I agree with you Kenn 100% I love the place... but I also have spent close to 19 of my 24 summers all in that area(not to mention 2-5 trips a year, family)... and though I love the surroundings and know the area like the back of my hand I really want to try something new this weekend... I was looking at putin bay, my wife has been I have not, But she also said it is pretty much all food and alcohol, which I can do here rofl.

Sucks there isn't a Sea world on Erie any more. My daughter loves places like that and I went when I was younger and loved it.

St Louis has an awesome Zoo that is free to get into and you can park anywhere along the road for free. It's just as big as the Cincy or Columbus ones and it's free. The arch is cool as well, we didn't go in it but took pictures by it. The city museum was cool as well

the City museum wasn't amazing, but it would be great for kids. They thing that saved it for me was you could pay extra to go the aquarium they have inside, it was decent.

Traverse City, Michigan may fit your bill.  Ton's to do there, and not as hot as going south or west :)

Kellys Island or Put in Bay is a nice place to go. Only 2.45 hours away plus a 20 minute ferry over to one of the islands. You can also stay in Sandusky at the Great Wolf Lodge or just spend the day there. There is another big water park close, Cedar Point and Sundusky Zoo. Of course great fishing. Lots of historical places to visit, outside outlet malls etc...

Yes, South Bass Island (Put-In-Bay, OH) and Cedar Point (Sandusky, OH) would make a great weekend trips. During my college years, I worked one summer on South Bass Island (Put-In-Bay) and also worked another summer at Cedar Point...both places are a lot of fun. The Jet Express Ferry runs daily to the Island from Port Clinton. Put-In-Bay also has a small airport....a few years ago, we flew into Put-In-Bay for a weekend camping trip...one of my friends has a pilot's license and was a member of the Dayton Pilot's Club at Wright Brothers Airport near Springboro. Flying into Put-In-Bay was a little scary though....the runway is very small. The only negative about Put-In-Bay and Cedar Point is trying to find last minute hotel and/or camping accommodations...the camp grounds and hotels are usually booked weeks in advance during the busy summer season.

Check out the link below if you are interested in taking the Ferry to Put-In-Bay. They also offer daily trips to Kellys Island as well.

Put-In-Bay reminds me of a smaller version of Key West's famous Duval Street. Downtown Put-in-Bay is filled with lots of bars (w/ live music), restaurants and shops. Wine tours are available as well. You can also rent golf carts and bicycles and tour the entire Island as well.

We went to Grand Rapids a few weekends ago.  If you're into beer there are like 14 breweries in the city.  If you are REALLY into beer you KNOW that both Bells AND Founders breweries (probably 2 of top 10 in nation) are there.  Fun weekend, zoo, beaches, etc.
