Question for Scott W.
« on: October 30, 2006, 08:35:00 »
Scott, here is a picture of a coral I got from you a long time ago.  It's obviously growing good!  :)  My question: the monti is growing up to the acro.  Will ti stop when they meet or do I need to move the acro?

Thanks!

chemical warfare will happen when they touch.  one will probably kill the other.
That one guy who used to be on all the time......

As far as the balancing act goes.  I am not very experienced in this matter in the display aquarium.  I would hate to just let them sit there because that acro is so small if it were not to fare well you could loose it.  I do know that some species will grow up to each other and then they just stop growing there and start growing else where and just coexist.  You could also have the monti not kill it but overgrow it and shade it out.  A lot could happen but I would hate to see it end in death so you may want to move it.

I can move the acro and break that piece off of the monti, but, the monti has already grown onto the plug holding the acro.  Once I break that off, how do I kill that part of the monti?  I've moved monti's before and the small piece that was left has grown on the old part (in different spots of the LR).

Does this make sense?  :)

Thanks, I'll do that.

It must be because I can hardly see it!  :)

Hopefully Randy will have one laying around in the garage. ;D

You might want to just go out and buy a new one. You never know where a chisel that's laying around a garage has been!! Heaven knows you don't want to get anything like that into your tank!!

Just grab the first shiny, very sharp chisel you come across.  Randy won't mind  ;)

I would opt to move the acro. The monty will definately loose the battle unless it just shades the acro from a distance.

IME(about 4 or 5 times) an acro will always kill the bit of monti that touches it... the monti should stop growing into the acro and may grow up.

So basically, the section that the monti is touching the acro will die and the acro will be fine?

Pretty bad when I have to "schedule" tank picture time huh?   ::)

Here is what Melev says about my acro and cap growing together:

I would leave it and see what it does.

I bet you could extract the plug from the M. capricornis and not even damage it. The lower coral would look funny, as it won't be touching any rock at that point.

There's no reason to kill off any part. Even if there was some left on there, it may grow out a different direction later.

So, for now I think I'll leave it and see what happens.
