Very new!
« on: October 17, 2011, 14:23:19 »
I'm quite new to this. So new I don't even have an aquarium yet.  I came across this site while trying to research "How to's".  We just want to be successful with a tank so figured we should learn as much as we can before actually purchasing something.  There is so much information out there I told Husband Sunday we should just get a membership to the aquarium here and wait on trying our own. However, two of our four children tested gifted in Science and I know aquariums involve a lot of science.  Dear daughter is all about the show Tanked and anything Nat Geo.  Would be pretty neat to bring that to our living room.  So, any advice or information that would help us through this would be quite welcomed!!

Welcome !!

All I can say is you started the process the correct way ... Research first... Tank second.

You could start out by asking all the questions you have so far. Another suggestion is to look at our Member Tank Profiles which can be found here >>   http://www.ohioreef.com/index.php?board=8.0

Again welcome to the board !

Welcome!

There is a ton of info you can find in the Do It Yourself (DIY) section if you are interested in having your kid do some fun projects. Plus it helps you learn about the biological cycle of the tank and much more.

Just some basics on what to know is that if and when you get a tank, you need to let the tank's water cycle, a creation and balancing of bacteria through the water, sand, rock. Then you are ready for some fish and if you want to get into coral, you will need some correct lighting which you can find for sale on here or many other sites pretty cheap.

In this hobby though, you must have patients. Rushing will usually lead to a disaster. There are some charts around of fish compatability. If you are wanting to go with some coral, pay attention to those that are reef safe as not all are.

There are plenty of us on here willing to help out in any form that we can. We also have meetings once a month to get to gether, eat, talk, etc. Helps put some faces to some names and usually a better form of getting an understanding of a subject that you may not understand.

If you need to get anything, check with some sponsors, they can usually get you some deals.

Read lots.  If your kids are into the science part, get them lots of books.  Check you local library for recent (no more than a few years old) books.  Also Local Fish Stores and Sponsors have access to recent publications.

Spend plenty of time going through the forums here and at other clubs.

Start with a tank >40 gallons.  Some people think smaller tanks are easier but they are actually harder to maintain because when there is something wrong it can go downhill very fast due to the small water volume.

Electrical Engineers do it on impulse, with faster rise times, with more power, and less resistance at higher frequencies, without shorts, until it Hertz

Thank you all for the warm welcome!  We are still in the research stage of this.  Not sure if it is something we will be able to accomplish at this moment in time, but do enjoy reading how creative you all are.  Thanks again for all the advice and welcomes.

Welcome to the club!  My 4 yo daughter watches the tank like a hawk.  She could say "melinarus wrasse" at 3, and now when the LED's fade to moonlight, she's on the stool in front of the tank with a flashlight looking for "bad starfish".  We've recently had a huge outbreak of astrea(sp?) starfish, and have been hunting them down.  It' a great hobby to allow the kids to participate in.
90g SPS and LPS reef tank, 35g sump, ceramic rock by The Alternative Reef, Neptune Apex w 2 X EB8's, Moonlight module, ATI Sunpower Dimmable 8 X 39W T5's, Octopus Extreme 160 skimmer, PM Kalkwasser Reactor, 2 X Vortech MP40's, Geo 618 Ca reactor

Various thriving montipora, acropora, stylopora, wellsophyllia, blastomussa, hammer, anchor, and frogspawn, lobophyllia, rhizotrychus, pavona, scroll, and pagoda SPS and LPS corals, but no fish because I was too stupid to QT...

welcome to the site and you should become a member and take ur time and ask questions ask questions ask questions. cause there is nothing worse than doing something wrong when it could have been prevented and it spoils your whole experience but just look around and see what people there are some people on here with amazing tanks and setups.
