Local Acrylic Supplies
« on: August 17, 2009, 00:00:25 »
Anyone know where I can get weld-on 3/4 locally? I want to try my hand at acrylic construction.

EDIT: Might as well ask where to get cell-cast acrylic too :)

Crap man. There is a place right there in Huber that has it, and I can't remember the name. Google "Acrylic, Huber Heights Ohio".

Meyer plastic its behind target. You can also go to the old ge polymers ( sp? ) on needmore. There acrylic is cheaper but its easier to get weld on from meyer. the place on neeedmore use to make you buy a case to get it. They have changed names since so im not sure how they do it now.

Yea i called them a year or so ago trying to find a drop off and they said they only sell to people with business accounts setup with them.

How much are you looking for and what thickness do you need?

Hehe, sorry. Haven't explained myself well. Using 3 of the 7"x24" as sides and the bottom, cutting the other one up for ends and braces.

You also have to take into consideration the thickness of the acrylic, or your box won't have corners lol.

Hehe, yeah. I'm not super concerned about the size. Just looking for something about that size to mount over my sump. My idea is too feed the frag tank with a branch off my return pump then drain the water back into the sump. My stand is pretty tall so I have alot of room under the tank. So I'm gonna grow mangroves in the sump and cheato under the frag tank. That way I can use one light for all of that. Any suggestions or idea?

Sounds like a neat idea but keep in mind. your frags will require light between 10k and 20k where your micro alges require 5-6.6k lighting.

Hummm.... Whats about the mangroves?

I had considered a clip-on light under the frag tank for the cheato.

the mangroves require the same light as the cheato. the clip-on light would probably work.

Gah! So many things to think about! Maybe I'll scrap the mangroves and split my fuge in half longways. cheato on one side and frag on the other.

Could one of the admins take a look and rename this thread?

Great info is being posted that could use a better heading now that it has expanded

I think it is great BTW. I am getting info on how to design and build a HOB refugium for my 26g so this has been great

Please do a build thread on that, I'd love to see it come to life.

Andy, I was looking at acrylic sheets here:

http://www.estreetplastics.com/Plexiglass_Sheets_Clear_s/21.htm

Let me know if you want to do a order with me, they have a good discount for 10 or more sheets. I can get it shipped to my work (or yours it seems) for cheaper shipping.

If anyone else wants in, feel free to speak up!

there weldon is cheaper than anyone else local. There acrylic is somewhat higher but they are the easiest to deal with. You can walk in and place your order. Most others make you call in your order.

Do they cut it for you at Meyers?

JD did you check Lowes? They have 1/4" Acrylic. They will cut it aswell, but I would double, wait scratch that, triple check the cuts. I built a sump with their fine cuts once. Lets say it didn't work out well.

Lowe's doesn't sell cell cast acrylic. They sell extruded. Yes they will cut it for you. I don't remember if they charge or not though.

Last I heard the cuts for acrylic are $.25 each. They cut glass free.

I know that to order weld-on it costs you and arm and a leg. There is some special permit you have to get (last I remember) I may order the acrylic online and get the weld-on there as well as a few test pieces.
