Another Frag Plug Idea
« on: February 23, 2010, 00:42:57 »
I'm already uphappy with my frag tank, so I'm going to build a new one!  ;D

Has anyone ever tried using plastic golftees as frag plugs? I think they float but If you can drill a hole slightly smaller than their shaft you should be able to wedge them in an acrylic sheet.

Anyone wanna go in with me? 100 plugs is only 3 bucks!

The problem you may run into is trading with fellow hobbyists say at the Ohio Reef frag swap, people may not be able to accomadate the profile of the golf tee's.

I tried drilled acrylic plates but found that they hindered flow. Here was my attempt at it

But Brian, this way I can also sell an adapter to allow my frags the buyers rack! Its win-win(for me). Heheh, good point Brian, I can I can find some tees locally I may still give it a go just too see how they work. I could always remount the frags before I sell/trade them... hummm...

Your rack looked nice! Its a shame it blocked flow. Did you make them before you set up your 33?

Yeah I made 6 or 7 plates each at different levels in the tank. Thought it was a cool idea but didn't quite work out so I sucked up my pride and went the traditional route.

I've considered using the plastic golf tees it seems like you could fill the top with gel attach your frag and be done with it.

In Calfo's book he used the little green florist spikes in his large scale propagation business.  You can just push an SPS frag into the top and its holds it.  After it encrustes he said you couldnt even tell what it was

i think the best part of that book was when he talks about accidently wiping the sweat off his face with a towel that he used to clean a cutting board he was cutting zoas and platys on.

In the first quarter 2010, volume 4, issue of Reef Hobbyist magazine, there is an article about using acrylic rod as frag holders. It looks like it would work very well. AS has the magazine and the best part is it's free!!!

This link should get you to the article online:  http://www.reefhobbyistmagazine.com/archives/vol_4/issue13/pages/6.htm

Yup, I'm already working on making that system.  I'm about to tear my "Lil Tank that Shouldn't" and start over with it - doing the acrylic racks and acrylic plugs.

I'm working with the method in RHM already and I don't know how I like it yet. The plugs are a pain in the butt if you ask me. Golf Tees have taper that would work to hold them snugly in a rack.
