Flatworm?
« on: April 10, 2010, 17:14:05 »
Got this Cactus coral today.  It has some bright purple "things" on it. Do sure if its the tenticles or some kind of flatworm?? I have never had a cactus coral before.  I added a drop of Flatworm exit to the cup of water it was in and nothing happened.  Just wanted to see if this is normal for cactus

Not a great pic, but its the purple objects

They are only on the coral, not the plug or base.  I just read up on cactus.  Maybe they are the sweeper tenticles? they seem to be have a stringy appearance when in the Flatworm exit solution.  but they are not normal polyps

Is this the piece you got from me Wes? That is not a cactus as for my knowledge. The cactus I was referring to on the phone is the frag I could not find.

If it was flatworms, they'd pick right off, wouldn't they?  If they are part of the coral I'd think they would not.

I agree. Try to get them off first. Melafix works if you use it as a dip for flatworms. I had a hydnophora, but it never had that on it. If you have a QT set up, I would use it.

Litterially one of the wierdest things ever.  There are like 2mm round clusters of "stuff" sporadically all over the coral.  I took a strait pin and poked at them :) They retract when touched, but dont go into the coral or anything.  Its almost like they are super tiny clusters of hammer polyps or something.  I wish I could show someone. Well i scraped at a few and couldnt get them off the coral, so i figured it was part of the coral and...... so I just threw it in the tank  ;D We'l see what happeneds lol

Did you find out anything more as to what kind of coral it was? I have another one just like it and looks like it too, with the little bumps at the base but I thought that that was just where it was encrusting.

Keep me posted, please. I'm sure that I got it from LazyLiving so he can ID it.

Hey Wes I brightened the pic up a bit hoping someone can help. Hope you don't mind.

I agree with Rich on ID....hydnophora or common name horn coral. The anomally you are seeing may just be it's Nemacyst

The horn corals can have sweepers and when they are happy get quite fleshy looking. Often the nemacyst are in sort of circular patterns especially on the encrusting types of hydnophora
