Drilling
« on: January 29, 2013, 17:08:33 »
I just received my 1500gph overflow kit from glass holes.  I am going to be drilling my 220 (72 x 24 x 30).
Here is we're I need your opinions.

I am planning on only doing the one box.  If I need more I can always add a power head or two.  If I get a pump more powerful I am going to tee off the return to pump back into the sump.

We're should I put the box? Left, right, or center?
Thanks and God Bless,
John

I put mine on left becausei didn't want to use a ton of PVC elbow wanted it to drop straight into skimmer and sump

Left of center or right of center. That way there is a good change you can hide it with your rock/corals.

The tank has two braces.  I am planning on getting three l.e.d. Units.  I was thinking of drilling under the brace, so as the box may be hidden by the (hopefully) minimal shadow caused by the brace.  My only concern with doing this is that I will be limited in my access into the box.  But does this really matter?

I don't think you should ever have to access it unless something like a fish got in there.

That's what I thought but I wanted to double check.

Next question:  How far below the trim do you setup your overflow box?

That's what I had planned but just wanted to make sure.
I had used overflow boxes with the u tube in the past and hated them!  I'm not worried about drilling the holes, I'm worried getting them in the right place!  Agggghhh and this is just the beginning.

Why doing your design make sure you think of back siphone as far as return and when power goes out you don't flood anything

I'm assuming in reference to back flow through the return pump?  I am going to use loc line and attach that to pvc or hose and drill a hole in it above the water line, to break the siphon.  But will also plan on making sure my sump has enough capacity in case the hole becomes clogged.

I also had a problem my overflow wasn't 100% sealed up had a leak from tank to overflow so it also wasn't breaking siphone in the bean system
