Silicone help Please.
« on: July 20, 2013, 12:26:48 »
I have use G.E. silicone I several time with no ill effects. But now Lowes only carries it in white. So I researched it on the Internet, and we all know everything on the Internet is true. But I read the the white pigment they put in the silicone enables it to cure enough to use in an aquarium. Sounds kind of crazy to me. So should I be worried about using the stuff to add some baffles to my sump?

Just get the window and door..... stay away from the bathroom...

Once cured it all will be inert anyways. Make sure it doesn't say mold inhibitor on it... The GE 2 blends come in white,clear,black,brown,grey.. and if it's window and door it has no mold inhibitors.

Some people online make a way bigger deal out of a whole lot of nothing... ;)

The 1 vs the 2 means a whole lot of nothing, both can have fungicides... The 1 and 2 means the blends and how they cure, 1 makes aecitic acid as it cures, and cures quicker but is weaker than 2, and 2 makes ammonia as it cures, takes longer to cure but is stronger(the ammonia does not leach once cured, just wipe it down and your good to go...... Just look at your tubes for fungicide.

Yes, traditionally the window/door does not have inhibitors. And your tube will lit if it is mold resistant or not... You will be good Joe. Just let it cure for the full 24hours.

Why not just use standard aquarium silicone?

There's not a store that sells it around here. Not even our local Jacks. I have used the GE Silicone before & bought it at Lowe's. Just didn't know they stopped carrying it. And I wanna work on it this evening.

The "standard" aquarium silicone is the same as GE's blend in practicality...as long as it is 100% silicone with no inhibitors it will be fine... With the exception that GE silicone will cast you 3 bucks where aquarium safe is about 6 bucks for half the quantity... It all about the licensing though, which is why GE does not list Aquarium safe. RTV 103-108 is the best you can use and you will never find it listed as aquarium safe, even though it is food safe.
