1" drain/s how much flow?
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:43:50 »
Just curious how much flow a 1" drain can round about do. I remember someone telling me that a mega flow does like 600gph ,but I had a dual over flow with a mag 24 and it handled it fine. Just dont know if there is a real rule of thumb

I did a 1" drain for my frag tank and it is handling flow fine. using a Mag 650 GPH. May want to go larger for anything more then that.
Here is a shot of the standpipe. I don't have a screen on it yet though so not sure if that will make a difference.

1" drain will comfortably flow 500 GPH with a max of about 600 GPH. It has been my experience that they start getting noisy when you go much past 500 GPH.

I agree with Joel. 500 gal/hr is pretty good. If you want to see some high flow rate overflows go to glass-holes.com...These guys sell a couple monster overflows in the 1500-2000 gal/hr range. When too much flow just isn't enough...lol

I still cant figure it out then i that is correct. I had a mag 2400 on 3-4ft head and it was really really putting it out there and it worked on just a dual over flow.hmmmm

thanks for the info

Did you have many 90 degree elbows on your return? I know they cut back flow considerably, but with a mag24 the math doesnt add up

ya that was my point there is no way I could have restricted it that much , besides the fact that it clearly was near 2000gph just by looking at the flow. I had a 180 with no other pumps and it had what I would consider strong current system.

It was a straight pipe off the pump to a T then 1 90 on each side that was it. It was loud as hell ,but no other issues. 2 standard stand pipes 1" on a mega flow.
