who will win? battle of the tangs
« on: January 20, 2009, 21:36:38 »
I just added a purple tang to my tank with an existing yellow tang.  Both are identical in size.  Anyone want to take dibs on who will be the boss?  Thanks for the great fish lazylivin.

I say initially it will be the yellow and then the purple once it gets adjusted to the surroundings.

Well so far lazylivin is winning out with his guess of the yellow tang.  The new purple tank is taking the worst of wear so far.  I am glad this new guy isnt any smaller.  He or she might be really taking a beating.

So sad you should remove one of them.

How big of a tank?  I got the blue tang from lazylivin 3 days ago and put him in with my purple and there was very little fighting neither fish got a mark and they are swimming together now.

I don't think they are really harming each other more just sticking chests out saying I am the boss to establish dominance, maybe a nip or two hear and there which is to be expected.

Please let us know, your post sounds like they are harming each other.

My yellow is being boss right now.  The purple does have a small mark in it's top fin and one mark in its tail.  I went through this a couple of years ago with the same fish (yellow/ purple).  After they worked it out they were buddies.  The purple is getting bolder as the evening goes and I have seen him chase the yellow back into my rock work.  My tank is a 180 so there should be plenty of room.  I think it is just a matter of getting a pecking order set in place.  I have always read how purple tangs can be bullies.  I would really like both fish in the tank so I really dont want to have to remove either one unless it gets life threatening.

I agree 100%, seen lots of tanks w/Purple and Blue tangs living together. 180 is really nice...so jealous.

Purple and blues yes but yellows and purples are so close in shape they may fight to the death even in a 180
