Yellow polyps out of controll..
« on: February 22, 2012, 20:30:06 »
I bought a frag of yellow polyups back when I got my 28G nanocube (dumb mistake, I now know..)  Well they were small but now have taken over the whole rock, well them and my GSP.  What is the best way to get rid of the majority of it?

Sunlight and fresh air? (drying them out and then scrubbing them down in fresh water..)

I was able to rid myself of GSP by scraping it up with tweezers, but yellow polyps? If you find a way to deal with those, you'd be rich.

Mojano wand.  Isolate the rocks and zap them.

I wonder how far they would go If I just let them be??  How do you frag them?

Yep. They are a weed. If you want to frag then, just put a plug somewhere near or on top of them, it'll be covered soon enough.

I've been ripping them off with tweezers, mojano wanding, calc injecting, and cursing their existence for a year now. They just won't die without me sterilizing the rock and I'm not prepared to go that far just yet.

Majano wand worked best out of all the options used so far.

I think it's funny how we label 1 coral a pest and another which does the same thing a killer coral. I have had acro's monti's lps and shrooms take over an area and do major damage to other corals. When I had 2 tanks set up I had a huge colony of yellow polyps and loved them. I liked the way they moved with the current. Why not frag the rock or break it down and isolate the yellow polyps on the sand bed or somewhere they cannot spread out from, just a thought?

I agree, I love the look of them but I only have so much room in my little 28G nanocube.  I wish they would just stay on one rock.  In my next tank id like to isolate a nice rock with yellow polyups and GSP.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure."
My recommendation is to sell/trade them with someone who likes them.  Seel them or trade them for some live rock and both of you benefit.  Much better than killing it (in my humble opinion).

John

I love them.  They have covered the rock I put them on, but that's it.  I've had mine for a couple of years.  I like they way they move in the current also.  Maybe take the other coral off that rock and just let the polyps cover it.

I have the same problem with mushrooms. Ugh. Have cut them off with a sharp razor knife before but they just grow back.

If he takes them out of the tank and puts the rock in a 5 gallon bucket with saltwater he can scrub them all off and rinse them in new saltwater without a problem.  I've done it many times.

Scrubbing them off in the tank will cause them to spread, thats why were gonna remove the rock, scub then dip in spare water so they don't spread.

I had to bleach four very nice rocks in a yellow polyp/ brown paly related event. This is why I went to a SPS LPS only tank. The little buggers won't stay dead, they're like the zombies of the coral world.

I would be surprised if there is no one out there who would be interested in buying/trading.

They aren't bad, just really fast growers that are hard to kill. Many folks like and encourage them, I'm the exact opposite.  I don't want to set containment for them and without it they take space I'd rather give to other corals.

Oh. I just wondered. I am a new equarist and I just received some lr today with a few polyps in them. Let's just say that I am so new, that I've been cycling my FOWLR tank since 18th of February.

Sanchezk, Make sure those polyps are to aptasia nor majano! Those are bad.  I would recommend posting some pics just to double check.

I'm guessing Tommy is saying this as a health concern more than making them spread.  Correct me if I'm wrong Tommy.

I wouldn't even try to get them off the rock.  I doubt if there is any easy way to get them off without killing them.
I would just sell(trade) the polyps and the rock.  At worse you trade a piece of live rock for your polyp infested live rock.
Thanks and God Bless,
John

That sounds like more realistic to do.
