DIY Motorized Light Lift
« on: October 12, 2019, 07:55:33 »
I recently got finished with a new tank build and was struggling for a awhile on how to mount my lighting. I have a rimless tank and a mix between LED and fluorescent lights. On my previous tank I suspended the lighting from the ceiling but the studs in my ceiling are running parallel with my tank so I didn’t have anything structurally to hang them from. I also wanted to conceal all the wiring to maintain a nice clean look.

After much thought I decided, to incorporate an motorized light lift in with the light stand. I absolutely love having the ability to get all the lighting up and out of the way while doing tank maintenance.

Here is a quick video of it in action.

Yeah I’m curious what you used to do this too! Linear actuators?

I used two 28” linear actuators that are controlled by pushbuttons used for the computer desks that can be raised and lowered. The framing used is two different dimensions that slides over top of each other so they can telescope. Here are a bunch of pictures of the build.

For the fluorescent lights, I used two of 36” Aquatic Light Hybrid fixtures. I completely dismantled them and rewired them so they only had one long cord versus the four that are designed to come out of the ends of the fixtures.

I fixed you images, and installed a plugin that should hopefully take care of it going forward.
