Does anybody here have a coral/region specific reef tank? What I would like to do is start a region specific reef tank and have only corals from that region. Any suggested reading?  I'm a novice when it comes to knowledge about corals so any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are into SPS or LPS, I would go with the 3 volume set entitled Corals of the World by Jen Veron.

That's a neat question. I have done biotope type aquariums with fish before but not with corals.

One problem might be that there could  be a lot of overlap. By that I mean, many of the corals we see regularly may occur in numerous places. Of the area specific corals that I am aware of, they are mostly off limits from collecting. For example, there are several corals that exist in the waters of southern Florida  & Caribbean that do not exist anywhere else but are illegal to collect.

I agree with Tim that a there are some very good coral books that should be helpful.

I have seen people do zone specific reefs.  Reef crest, back reef ,lagoon and such.  There are the cold water reef tanks.  Like Joel was saying there are lots of overlaps in coral reefs.

Not according to my husband... ;)

I really toyed with a cold water reef for the basement, but the thought of an entire seperate system set up was a big too much to deal with.  Maybe someday who knows.  I've learned in my life time to never say never.  :)
