My First Coral!
« on: January 29, 2010, 19:58:40 »
I was at Aquatic Specialists today for there big 40% off corals sale and picked up 4 peppermint shrimp, 3 cerith snails, 40 grass shrimp (breeding puffer treats), and my first coral & first anemone. The coral is a sun coral. I'll post pictures when it opens up all the way.

Thanks again Justin!

We've been having this issue a lot lately.  Are you using an outside program to host (like photobucket?)  Try that if you aren't already

The picture you posted of your Sebae Anemone (Heteractis Crispa) is bleached and will likely not live more then a couple of months. May want to consider taking it back for a healthy one. Although the are commonly white it unfortunately indicates a unhealthy specimen that has expelled its  zooxanthellae.

+1 on the anemone being very unhealthy. What sort of lighting is it under?  Fortunately, anemone's will do a bit better with some direct feeding until it can regain its color.  Try giving it larger pieces of oyster, shrimp, etc since it has lost its symbiotic zooxanthallae algae.  In a very new tank such as yours, it unfortunately will probably not recover.  Anemone's are pretty sensitive to changing water parameters, need intense lighting, etc.

Nice looking coral.
You do realize Sun Coral are non-photosynthetic? Each polyp should be be feed a few times a week.

Try some shrimp juice to get the sun polyps to open. Makes it easier to feed.

I don't think the anemone is unhealthy. It is white, but not transparent. So not bleached. Justin told me the name of it, but I can't remember what it's called now. I did read that sebae's are not the easiest anemone for a newbie, so I returned it for that reason. I think I might try a long tentacle anemone or a bubble tip.

As for the sun coral needing to fed, I'm well aware and looking forward to feeding it at 5pm every day. As some of you know, I love feeding my fish. I'm sure I'll love feeding my coral too.

I won a bid on eBay so you will all be thrilled to know I will have a skimmer soon. It's a Aqua C Remora. I'm also getting some T5 lighting with moonlights this Friday.

Yay for the skimmer!  Too bad about the anemone, but good call in the end.
