Hypo questions?
« on: May 05, 2013, 21:58:54 »
So I put my fish in to hypo about 2-3 weeks ago and I notice a few spots of ich on a fish still I have been keeping the tank at 1.009. So what is going on. contrary to everything I have read I have lowered the sg to 1.005. And it ich survives this I don't know what ill do.  So is this normal to still see ich on a fish in hypo?

The spots you see on fish aren't the actual parasite, they're the inflammatory reaction to the parasite burrowing- either in or out.

So depending on when you started, you could be seeing the last of the ich that was already in the fish burrowing out.

This is the last gasp of the ich.

Are you sure your meter or refractometer is calibrated?   You need to make sure that you have an accurate reading of the salinity.  I would not go less than 1.008

And yes, 2-3 weeks would not concern me.   Just make sure you go hypo at least 4 weeks past the last signs of ich.

Yeah I have calibrated several times. To check. I just need to get these fish ich free so I can sell them soon.

Yea, I have also been told to not go under .008 due to I think liver problems with the fish?

If started on the 23rd and we are on may 5 now, you haven't even hit two weeks yet.

Dropping the salinity lower then their bodies can take will not make the ich go away faster allowing you to sell quicker.... If you wanted the fastest way I would of used copper, its a month treatment vs 6-8 weeks for hypo treating.  Messing with salinity to much will kill them....
300g tub o fish

Personally, I never go below 1.007, and I've never had a recurrence, nor have a fish die in hypo.
