Overflows
« on: April 18, 2012, 17:36:57 »
Right now my overflows are on the sides of the tank so half the veiw from the side is cut off. I was wanting to get a siphon overflow to hang on the back and was wondering if the holes from the built in overflow could be covered up and how i would cover them up
Thanks

Not sure if this is exactly what your referring to Cole, but this is a great overflow system.

Get a cap and short threaded piece of pipe. Thread into your return and drain bulkheads assuming you have bulkheads. Remove corner overflow. Seems like your going backwards to undrill a drilled tank just to add a hang on overflow. Hang ons can tend to have more issues. I love the bean overflow but would be too hard to do on already stocked tank. I plan on doing it on my new tank though.

You could also look into glassholes.com, or go the route Lazylivin went on his tank. You can find more about it in his tank build. I can personally tell you his tank is dead silent.

Glass holes have great overlfows. I recomend one of theres rather than a hang on style. Im not sure how easy it would be to do with a stocked tank though.

Everyone is the first time... it's not hard, just make sure you aren't drilling tempered glass.

Just like drilling through anything else, just keep it straight and steady, take your time.

Yeah sorry Cole may have led you astray on it being hard to drill. Its reall not hard on an unfilled tank. Like otgers are saying just take your time. Let the bit do the work. The problem i see would be doing it on a tank with water and livestock. I would be leary of glass shards getting into the tank. I guess if you were able to drain it 10-12 below top may be able to pull it off if someone was holding a rag to catch water and glass as cutting jmo. How big is your return pump? Can you go with only overflow on one side?

So if i did this would just putting  a slab of acrylic and siliconing it done over the holes from the existing overflows be enough to seal them

Assuming the tank is glass get you a piece of glass and silicone it over the hole. Silicone doesn't adhere to acrylic very well.

Ideally the same thickness as what your tank is. You will also want to overlap the holes a good amount. A couple inches if possible.
