Culturing Tisbe pods
« on: October 08, 2012, 23:06:58 »
I culture Tisbe pods to feed my tank. They sit on my back porch in small 3/4 gallon white plastic pail. I add some phyto and a couple hundred pods and the sun did the rest. Here is a video I took tonight from one of the pails I brought in to feed the tank.

Put pods in pail, add a couple caps of phyto, put outside in sunlight. That's it. :)

From 33F - 100F no problem. Ideal is 60 - 80. I don't run heater or anything. They just stay outside all day all night as long as it doesn't freeze they are fine. Direct sun light.

Would you care to sell a small culture to a fellow reefer?

I did the same with Brine shrimp per brain's advise, and they worked out great, got nice and fat, I "seived" them out and froze them in ice trays.

I also tried this with the pods, but mine crashed,  I think because they were getting cooked as I tried it during that hot spell in summer, and I started with a bad cuture of pods(not Brian's, they were online ordered).

I found with my brine shrimp and pods that they attracted a ton of bugs because of the open water, so I placed a small fan blowing across them and it put an end to the bug problem.

Just echoing Cody's observations. I was probrably to extreme with temps. Above 90F they thinned out alot. However cold nights no problem just didn't reproduce as fast. When I first started I used airstone with air pump and found it made no diffrence so don't use that anymore. They can handle great salinity swings as well.

If anyone wants a setup I can make a culture package. It would include live phyto, pods and culturing container. 15$ should cover costs.

Yes, I would like a starter culture of your pods... You start a new culture of phyto? If so I would love some of it too.

Got everything ready for starter kit. It includes
1.) 8oz phyto
2.) culture vessel
3.) sieve
4.) starter culture of red Tisbe pods

All you will need is a light source (sun or artificial). No heat or air is required.
If you interested shoot me a PM

Is this the phyto you got from me a couple months back? If yes you can put it in a gallon jug, add saltwater, aeration and strong bright light. In about 3 weeks the new phyto growth will consume all the nasties. You will know it is ready to go when there is no longer any smell to it. I checked the 10 day forecast and it isn't going to freeze so for fastest growth put it in direct sunlight with aeration and it might be ready in a week.

If you shake it every day then max shelf life is 3 months. If you never shake it then maybe a month.

Here is my culture.  I have it sitting over my frag tank.......well my BTA tank.  Culture has been growing for a week.  The Phyto is a nice iridescent green.   This morning I can see a recent hatch of pods in the container.

Sometimes I have to tap on the side to make sure they are still in there. I think it's just my eyes. You also have to make sure to take some out regularly. Once I started doing that, they filled in better than ever.

Well I think I successfully killed my culture.   Not sure what I did wrong.  They were thriving, and then I decided to do a water change.    Ever since, the phyto seemed to grow and take over the bucket.   Forming large chunks.   I tried changing the water a few times since....no luck.

I still have a couple swimming here and there, but they are nearly clear.....almost like they just don't like the strain of phyto that has taken over......

Bleach your bucket, rinse the ones that are left and add them back with some phyto and you should be good to go. When you do water change are you doing it with fresh sterile saltwater or using tank water?
