The 180 is finally started!
« on: December 08, 2008, 08:39:53 »
So, I've been feeling inspired lately by all of these new tanks people have been setting up, and it was really cold out this weekend, so I'm happy to say my 180 is finally started. I know some of you on here have given me a hard time about being so lazy about it. I got all of the baffles in the sump, bulkheads in, made two trips to lowes to get the right plumbing stuff, so hopefully today I can start on the plumbing. I'll try to snap some pics when I get home from work.

These aren't the best pics. I need to adjust the white balance on my camera.

Here's the tank. Ignore the beer tap, I had to snap it on an angle to avoid getting my own reflection in the pic.

And here's the sump, nothing too special. I know it's dirty. I don't plan on cleaning it out until I fill it with water to test for leaks.

are you going to only access it from the back of the tank? or are you going to put "doors" above the tank for access??

so with your sump you are going with the return being in the middle of it?

I like it.. keep us updated... looks good

It will only be accessible from the back which is my laundry/fish room, so it's not that big of a deal. I do have to stand on a step ladder though to reach inside of the tank. I will probably end up falling in it one of these days.

Yes, the return will be in the middle of the sump. The drains will come down on the right and left, but there will be a ball valve on the right, and it will be connected to the drain on the left. Any excess water will drain into the skimmer side. (That's a horrible description, so I'll have to post pics once I do it. I think a couple of other people on here have the same design). If that works ok, I may put a dsb/chaeto on the right hand side. If it doesn't work out, I'll just do rubble.

This is going to be a FOWLR tank. I've got my little sps tank upstairs, so I wanted to try some aggressive fish. Maybe in the next house I'll do a bigger coral tank.

How about an "aquascaping party"? I got everything I need to get this tank going from Joel this week. Now, I'm dreading having to make 200lbs of rock look half way decent in there. It's still sitting by my front door right now, but I'll post up some pics once everything is actually in there. Hopefully within the next couple of days.

Yes, the beer tap is working fine, maybe you should come check it out  ;).

I think I might have it under control. I got about half of it done right now. The other half is just stacked up in a pile, and sadly enough it looks better than the rock I spent 1&1/2 hrs. meticulously stacking. It sucks because I have to climb on a ladder and lean in the tank to stack the rock(all while hitting my head on my lights because I can't get them down by myself and trying not to drop the rock and crack the tank) , and then I have to run around to the other room  to see what the rock actually looks like in the tank. I'm sure it's quite amusing to watch though.

Nikki, I'll call you. I could use another set of eyes.

Ok, here is my sorry attempt at aquascaping. After awhile, I just decided it was "good enough" because I didn't want to deal with it anymore. I was trying to build lots of caves for the fish to hide in. There's 3 decent sized caves in there, so it'll have to do. I think I need to add a little bit more sand.  Tank is filling up with water now, so hopefully by this weekend I can start cycling it. It's still pretty dirty, I keep forgetting to clean the inside of the tank walls.

Hey the rock work looks great! Nice and open but plenty of area to mount corals.
