Looking for a pump
« on: January 28, 2009, 00:33:13 »
I'm looking for a pump to push a Red Sea Berlin skimmer i got tonight... Approx 500-550 GPH, just about any brand would do.

I have heard a mag7 or mag9 work with those skimmers or a rio 2500

Anything smaller then those the skimmers do not perform well, at least that's what I heard

Clean out the venturi every month or so as well

unfortunanly I do not have any extra pumps big enough laying around

wow, really? The instructions say 500-550GPH would work. Would it make a difference if it's only going to be used on a 55 gallon? I know it can handle more than that according to the packaging/instructions..

Well, i'm looking for a mag7 or a rio 2500 then! lol

Don't believe the instructions.  I have the same skimmer.  My MAG5 doesn't even begin to do a thing.  I have always seen people running 1000-1300 GPH pumps on them.  I am looking for a pump for mine as well.  Let me know if you find one and how well it works out.

I think they need at least 500gph at whatever headpressure they have....  a Mag5 definantly wouldn't cut it!

I ran a pump back when I used these skimmers & it threaded directly into the pump & it worked great.  I just cannot remember it's name.

I know Joel uses these skimmers at his shop, possibly ask him what you should use

Yep, a Mag 7 or 9.5  I run a Mag 9.5 but do have to dial it down some.  I tried a RIO 1700 but it didn't push enough water.

If you get a pump that a little to big you can always dial it down to where you need it.  You can't boost a pump that's to small.  I always like to go a little bigger just to cover any variables I didn't take into account.

Your skimmer seemed to be running fine.  The only thing I would do is ask some of the guys on here about mesh moding your pump.  I am running one on my skimmer and the differance is amazing.

Not meaning to hack the thread, but can you mesh mod just any pump?

Thats my understanding.  JoeAyers can tell you more about how to do it but it seems kinda simple.  I think there are a few other people that know how to do it around here also.  Here is a picture of my impeller with a mesh mod.

at least i know my pump is big enough then i suppose.

what a coincidence, lightningfront had mentioned mesh modding my skimmer tonight..

from what it looks like you cover that piece in grease and gunk and roll it around in the yard lol

anyways, which piece is that exactly? the "baffle" that goes under the center tube?

if so i'd deffo be in for that mod. i had to widdle that piece out of a CD spindle cover lol so anything would be better than what i've got

my bad, i thought this was a skimmer mod, but it's for the pump impeller... what a noob  ::) i never learned to read

maybe someone should start a new thread about how to mesh mod, or does someone have a link to an existing one? I'm going to go google it now and check it out, seems like the thing to do

i had to skip thru a lot... almost 30 minutes of uhhhs and okays for like 10 minutes of actual work lol

i get the jist of it between this and the websites i found on google...

so the question is, does anyone have any of this PF4 mesh I could buy? If not, i will be ordering some from the intrawebs if anyone wants in. i'm sure i'd have extra.

psshhh, been there, seen that! lol

seems like the place to buy tho, given the domain name huh... it'd just be easier to get it from someone here rather than ordering and all that.

did you say you were gonna do this mod for your skimmer(s)?

lol, it was $3 for a kit.

I'm going to do it for the new skimmer I get for the 125. Not applicable on the other skimmer for the 46. The AquaC EV skimmers don't use needlewheels, they have some kind of spray injection.

I think I'm going to mesh mod my pump when the tank is finally done cycling. I know Marine Solutions carries some type of mesh to do the mods. They were very helpful when I needed a new impeller, and made sure everything was working properly before I left.

i was thinking a larger sheet to share, but ah well.

i suppose you can get 3 layers out of a 6" x 6" piece. I may "upgrade" to the ultra deluxe $4.50 model. you know since my tax return came back and all, i figure why not splurge a little...  ::)
