Paint in Saltwater
« on: October 10, 2011, 18:18:21 »
I think I asked this question before but I forget the answer and couldn't find it in a search... What would be a good type of paint to use to put on something for IN THE TANK for decoration?  Something non toxic obviously but would also not come off in the salt water...

I would think anything latex non toxic of course, or marine paint

to be on the safe side should turn off the skimmer when painting and cover the tank when painting close to it
SIZE DOES MATTER

Krylon Fussion is the only paint I know of other than 2part epoxy paint that has been proven to be ok in a tank.

What about painting, letting dry well, then some type of acrylic?  That seems to be the buzzword that is used on the show Tanked all the time, and they are 'professionals'  :o

Ok, so if something was painted with non toxic paint then sprayed with Krylon Fusion CLEAR, would that work ok?

I would set it in water a few days to make sure it don't release.   What are you going to paint?

A friend of mine is going to paint some Christmas decorations or something to put in her saltwater tank.  She wants to free hand paint some things but the only krylon fusion I see is spray paint.

I use Krylon Clear Glaze on a lot of stuff. Not for tanks tho.  I'm reading the label, it has a lot of toxins in it.  They might want to call Krylon and ask them if it's fish safe.  1-800-4krylon.

She might want to try getting some bisque pieces at a pottery store and painting them.  After it's fired, it won't come off.

Sunny, is the clear glaze the fusion kind?  That's what I was told was safe.

No, it's a spray glaze.  I just called them, he said they do not have any paint that is fish safe.  He said the paint has chemicals in it.  But, I have read where people have used the fusion for decorations in their tanks.

I just had the coolest thing happen!!!  I thought, what the heck, I'm gonna call tanked to see what kind of paint they use.  I talked iwth Bret!  He then talked iwth Nick who does their painting.  He said he uses flat latex paint then uses a product from polygem.com called 1319 Ultra for a sealent.  He said not to skimp on the 1319.  O then called polygem and talked with them.  It's a 2 part (which I'm guessing is like the 2 part epoxy that Mike mentioned).  They said the smallest they have is 3 gallon 2 parts A-1 part B.  It's on the high side $185.00.  Not sure we will do that, but it was quite cool to talk to these guys!  :D

Here is a link to the epoxy paint I am talking about. It is tried and proven for years, Just about all the top plywood tank builders use this paint at some point in their build.

http://www.aquaticeco.com/subcategories/3048/Epoxy-Paints

Now if you want to do anything from making a plywood tank stronger than glass to making custom what ever to add to your tank all the big guys use this

http://www.aquaticeco.com/subcategories/3048/Epoxy-Paints

I am still thinking about doing a huge (2000g+ ) freshwater tank. It will be plywood using both of the products listed above.
