Temperature of your Tank
« on: January 21, 2014, 19:56:18 »
What do you keep the temperature of your reef tank at? I believe this can be an opinionated topic like everything else in this hobby.

I keep mine at 78 and the apex is showing 77.4 right now.

I shoot for 78*. But it fluctuate from 78-80. Running the wood stove, the house can get warm at times.

What kind of heater do you guys use?

I've gone through several of these Finnex Heaters, the theomostat always goes out after about 6-8 months. I finally said screw it and bought the Finnex Deluxe Heating Titanium Tube and rely on my Apex to turn it on and off. I can't image any possible way for the one I have now to break.... its always on when plugged in, so no switches or contacts to get stuck on or off.

I have had the best luck with Ebo-Jaeger heaters, have tried many of the more expensive ones and all failed on me.

I have 3 Finnex. One is 500w that is running on Apex (Fallback ON) with a secondary Ranco controller. Two 300w (I think) running with Fallback OFF on the Apex only (no secondary controller). I put the Ranco on recently in Falback ON mode after my Apex locked up twice last month cause temp to drop to 69F. Fortunatley only lost one coral

Hey Brian, did you ever figure out what made your Apex freeze up? Anymore problems with it?

Yes it was DOS attacks on IP address. I had it on DMZ which made it vulnerable. If your not familiar with it and interested  here is some information. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack
Apex support was great who discovered the issue which allowed me to make some changes to fix problem.

Also, if the Apex is connected to your router, do not use external port 80 to go to your apex.   Use a non-standard port.

My tank Temp is 78.

I use Finnex (http://premiumaquatics.com/aquatic-supplies/FI-HMA-200.html)  But The temp control is set just a bit higher than 78, and the Apex does the control.  The temp control on the heater is just a backup.......Which I test them a few times a year.

As long as you plan on your heaters to fail, then you will be fine.   Use more than 1 heater in your tank.

Here are some things to think about.
1) If one heater quits working the rest can still maintain temperature
2) If one heater sticks on, it is not too high of a wattage that can raise the tank temperature significantly.
3) Run the heaters from different circuits on your apex. (Preferably separate EB's)
4) And be sure the EB8 outlet that runs the heater is in Fallback ON mode....just incase you have a base unit problem, or Aquabus cable gets unplugged.

Mine fluctuates between 77ish and 79 ... probably not perfect but seems to work.  I figure if I had more picky things it would be less ideal
