1/4" drywall?
« on: September 01, 2007, 11:25:07 »
Does anyone know where to get 1/4" drywall? Lowes and home depot dont carry it. We have some weird built walls so we need 1/4" to replace it.

Any drywall supply will have it.  Unfortunately, none are open on Sat.  United Building Supply on Stanley, or Miami Valley on Needmore are the closest.

Are you sure its 1/4"  That is used more for laminating over existing walls or for curved walls.

are walls are covered with 1/4 paneling. all the windows are set to the 1/4" as well as all the outlets. We want to replace the paneling with drywall so we can put real paint down.

well good news Menard's does carry 1/4" drywall in stock.  that's the least of my worries. My father-in-law came over and we ripped all the drywall out around the water heater and saw a huge mess. Most of the plumbing in the wall has to be replaced. 3/4" copper pipe is $16.00 for the thin stuff and $22 for the thicker stuff. There were 2 ball valves with not handles nor any place to put them. They have been broke off so we we now have ourselves a huge mess.

I appreciate the offers. We are looking at a tank less water heater at Menard's, The problem with it is it requires a 5" class b vent pipe, our original water heater vet is 4". is it as simple as replacing the y pipe with a 5" or is there more to it? Our furnace also vents with it. there it a 8" pipe that comes into the house and has a y that splits into 2 4" pipes.

OK I've been doing some research and now i have a question for some of the more experienced people out there. We need to re plumb the whole house. to save a tone of money were thinking of using PVC for all our cold water supply lines and copper for the hot. some of the research i did clams cpvc can be used for hot water but may become brittle over time.the last thing i need is an overhead water pipe becoming brittle and breaking.  Any thoughts?

There are systems out there that do not use copper pipe and can save you some money.  PEX tubing is one of the most available.  They carry it at the big box stores. http://www.ppfahome.org/pex/faqpex.html  I'm not sure about the special tools needed for the connections.  They may make it cost prohibitive for a one use deal.
I would not go with PVC or CPVC, mostly from a personal standpoint.  I have heard from too many plumbers that say even though PVC is labeled "for potable water", it still leaches chemicals into the water, and none of them would use it in their houses on the water side of the system.  I personally would stick with copper, only from the standpoint of it being a proven system.

They now make copper fittings that have the solder already in it so all you have to do is clean the fitting, throw some flux on it and heat it. My brother has used them and said they are pretty simple.

the main problem i have with copper is i have to run two lines over head that have quite a few bends and the fact its going to cost just under $200 just for pipe. No fittings or ball valves. i need around 120' of pipe. Im going to check some prices on the pex tubing today when i get up

I think PEX is what they use in a lot of mobile homes.

I think pex is becomming standard in Europe and Canada and is starting to be used more and more in the us.I checked today at lowes. 100' of 1/2" pex is about $26. depending on what style connectors you go with is where it gets expensive. The quickconnects like Jg fittting are expensive but easy to use. The crimp on style are half the price but, the crimp tool is $100 for each size or you can buy a kit for about $180. It has its pros and conns but i think it may be cheaper in the long run to go with the pex.

My brother is an electrician and I've noticed in a couple houses he's wired that they are using it now. Be interesting to see how well it holds up over time.

Ok we now have hot water again. We are going to try to re plumb the house in a few weeks. We are going to go ahead with the pex system. This will also allow us to easily add things to the system latter down the road. For $60 you can get a premade manifold so all you have to do is snake a line where you need it and screw in the fittings and your done. so much easier than running copper.

Well we finally got our house replumbed. We went with the pex system. Not including the tool we have about $200 in the whole house. It took a lot longer than i thought it would to run everything and test it. I will take some pics later. We are all so ripping out the wall that was damaged buy the water heater. As well as the cabinerts we didnt realize got wet.

Are you planning to keep the cabinets?  If not, how badly are they damaged?  We're looking for used cabinets for our basement laundry room.
