Video of AV99's reef

FYI- This is a very amateur quality video of my reef tank. As it turns out, my little point & shoot camera can record videos as well.

Thanks, Brian! The rock layout is the same, but I did recently remove 5 larger SPS colonies to make room for the remaining corals to grow out.

Lonnie, I am amazed as each month passes with the growth and color of my reef. Unfortunately, I don't think I can capture the true colors of the corals by video with an inexpensive point & shoot camera which means you should stop by for another visit soon!

Thanks for the compliment, Wall_Tank! I am experiencing exceptional growth and color for most of my corals. I recently removed five larger colonies to make room for my existing corals to grow out more. Not sure what I told you before, but I do top off my reef daily using Julian Sprung's C-Balance two-part, calcium and alkalinity mix that adjusts calcium, magnesium, and strontium ions to natural seawater ratios. I also run a large calcium reactor and an external skimmer. I literally feed my reef heavy about five times a day (not kidding at all)  and if it wasn't for my skimmer, calcium reactor and a 125g macro sump, I could not keep as many colorful fish and corals as I do now.

Thanks, Mike! I could give a small group behind the scenes tour of my reef if you are interested in putting something together? I am usually available on most weekends, either a Saturday afternoon or evening for a visit would be fine. Just let me know.

Most of Copps' corals are amazing. The Copps' Bonsai is one of my all-time favorites.

My ORA Red Planet arrived with the green base as well. Under 400 watt halides,  the ORA Red Planet will turn a solid red color. Under less light, you will see a nice touch of green as well.

:party0040:

 :-ThumbUpsm

I should be ready for a larger tank in a few years after the corals completely grow out. I would like to finish my basement and have a larger glass tank built on site.

My next addition may be somewhat of a huge risk, but I have an opportunity to add a rare gem tang in the next few months to my reef. I am turning into a Zebrasoma fanatic. My black tang is absolutely stunning! Mixing Zebrasoma (black and gem tangs) together in the same reef can be rather unpredictable. I am still one the fence and have a few months to decide before placing the order.

Thanks for the compliment, Dave  :-ThumbUpsm  I am still adding a few more SPS to my system.  A friend of mine will be attending the Buffalo, NY frag swap this weekend hosted by the Upstate Reef Society. I have two frags reserved from the NY swap and he will be shipping them to me within the next week or so. The first frag is coming from my friend's reek tank...it will be a large frag of his true Australian acropora echinata. The second frag I reserved is Brent's Grape Crush acropora. I can't wait to get these gems into my QT system.

Thanks, Micki! I can't wait to see those frags in my tank as well....but first they have to make it through shipping and then they have to go through my rigorous QT process....Unfortunately, I have lost a few gems in the past that never survived QT  :'(

I agree! I would never place an unquarantined fish or coral into my system. To quote Anthony Calfo, "not using a quarantine tank is like playing Russian roulette. Nobody wins the game, some people just get to play longer than others."  :-ThumbUpsm

I find the growth patterns very interesting on this coral. The way it sometimes grows very condensed and other times more spread out. Do you think that is a result of changes in flow and available light over time?

It is a combination of both adequate flow and turf wars.....A lot of my corals are growing very condensed because I am able to replicate the kind of flow you would find on a wild reef. At the same time, when the corals sense they are growing near each other, I also noticed the corals tend to grow more spread out in certain areas as well....because of turf wars, each coral is trying to gain as much reef real estate as possible.

Thanks for the compliment, Rich. The montipora in the ninth picture is a true pokerstar montipora. Here is another picture of the same coral photographed last summer.

Tim, can you stop teasing those of us that have a tank cycling?  ;D Seriously, I love your corals and I am anxiously awaiting a chance to see the whole set up. Did you say you wanted to host a meeting so we can get a behind the scenes of your tank? I can't promise that everyone won't drool over everything, lol.

I could probably offer a small group behind the scenes tour of my reef at some point this year (10 people or so max).....but since we just hosted a rather large event for the Cincinnati Reefkeepers Society last week, I am not so sure I could get spousal approval to host another large event anytime soon with a newborn in the house.

I am hoping Brian (Lazylivin) will stop by again during the Fall/Winter and take some amazing pictures of my reef. My underwater point & shoot camera takes nice top down photos of my corals, but pictures behind the glass are a different story.  Another hobbyist (drimo) recently took this full tank shot of my reef.

We understand. Especially now with the weather changing so much. Everyone getting sick and all, and the baby definitely does not need that. I will get there at some point to see it, I'm sure. The pic you just posted is gorgeous! I love those corals. Thanks for posting it up.

Thanks for the compliment, Micki!  I have four other corals in my reef that are still small but are really starting to take off just like the Jedi Mind Trick ...they include the following: 1) Tyree 20,000 Leagues Lokani; 2) Tyree Purple Monster; 3) Thunderstorm Millie and 4) Tyree $500 Efflo (from Copps').

Beautiful!

Some who know me well know how much I rave about Euroreef/Reef Dynamics skimmers (Made in the USA). Here are a few updated pictures of my Euroreef RC 500 in action with three recirculating Eheim 1262 pumps.

Nice skimmer! I was looking into getting a euro reef cs-2 or equivalent for mine, but I couldn't find anyone wanting to get rid of theirs, and I was always late on my bids for ebay(only saw 2 come up for sale in the month period I was looking)so I settled for a bubble magus nac 7.... look at all those ecotech... I'm sweating buying one... It's debatable if my wife will bury me over one.

Here are a few pictures of my Euroreef RC 1000 skimmer with five Eheim 1262 recirculating pumps. This skimmer is in storage now but will be used for another project I am working on in my basement. The skimmer stands four feet tall and is rated for "SPS" systems with a total capacity of 1000 gallons with a heavy bio-load.  :-ThumbUpsm

Actually, the Eheim recirculating pumps are energy efficient. If the impeller is clean and well maintained, each recirculating pump draws about 40 watts. After the pumps get pretty dirty after continuous use, the each pump will draw about 45 watts each, which is not bad considering the size of the skimmer.
