Phosphate Remover?
« on: December 25, 2007, 20:48:11 »
What is the best phosphate removing media. I got an Aqua C XP reactor for Chrismas and need to buy some media. I would appreciate some ideas. Thanks all.

That was my first choice Mick, but I thought I heard at one of the meetings someone mention RowaPhos.

Every time we do a water change.  However, I think Melev on RC tests his water coming out of the reactor. If the test is rising he will then change it out. I haven't tested in a while so I don't now what mine is right now.  I need to get ont hat.  :)

I've used RowaPhos for a few years now.  I switched a few months ago to twopartsolutions' phosphate removing media.  I had my water tested after using the new stuff with a colorimeter and the phosphates were .03 (which is good).  It is way cheaper than the Rowa if you use it all of the time like I do.  Something like $50 for a 1/2 gallon versus a pint.

The only one you want to stay away from is Phosguard.  It is aluminum based versus iron based in most of the other media.  The aluminum can leach out into your water per some experts, which is bad.

I just kinda go by how well everything is doing. I hardly ever test unless there are serious problems.

Scott, I can't find RowaPhos on their site.  They have Ferric Oxide, is that the same thing?

Yes, just not the name.  Supposedly all ferric oxide comes from the same place.  I bought their pellet version.  Very small pellets.

My bad, I read that wrong.  I wonder how it compares to phosban?

I've used Phosban fine for about 6 months now in my reactor.  I've been wanting to switch over to something else, but keep getting Phosban for too cheap.  It's good if you need something local.  I change mine about every other month, but I don't have many fish.

I use the GFO form twopartsolutions as well. might be a good group buy if everyone is interested. They are pretty good about cutting deals for clubs on large orders.
