Ich....ugh
« on: July 06, 2011, 11:35:48 »
Well, after 20 some years in this hobby, I have a fish with ich >:(.
I don't have a QT tank, nor do I have room
for one (at least big enough to house everyone, only one blue tang with
spots. Not many spots though. Still eating like a pig and haven't seen
him flashing or scratching on anything.
Thinking about trying the food soaked in garlic route, maybe a cleaner shrimp.
Has anyone tried this product called "No-Ich"? Supposedly reef safe.
Read some mixed reviews on it but I am quite sceptical.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

thanks all

I would go with garlic, cleaner shrimp and frequent feedings.

+1       keep from stressing him, and make sure he stays strong. Tried the no-ich route, but was using other methods during the treatment period so don't know if it was the no-ich that worked. Something to try if you get desperate.

well, going to use the 29 sump from my 125 build for a qt tank. going hyposalinity and see what happens.
Tank fallow for 8 weeks. From what I've read the best option. following a fw dip.
maybe copper. Would have to cut out my baqffles though because what I've read that tank will be useless
on a future reef tank. Any thoughts experiences?

thanks in advance.

Already in the works. Already cut out the baffles. Will be on the lookout for a 55 sump.
Will still fit under the stand. May have to redo some plumbing but better off in
the long run.

If you mean that it will be useless from the copper, then yes. Silicone is capable of absorbing copper and leaching later on.

Cool, to lfs tonight. Anyone have experience with this? Trying to decide hyposaliity or copper. I think copper may be more effective.  :hmmmm:

Copper may be better, but you have to deal with the residuals... which in my opinion make it not worth it... The hypo seems to be a choice route IMHO... My tang came down with a few small spots when I move him the first time, but I just added plenty of garlic and food into his diet and he shrugged it off in just a couple days, has been fine ever since.(Gave him that medicated pellets from jacks; came with my setup when I bought it, not sure if it made a difference though)

As with almost all ailments, stress makes it worse, so I'm with micki/starfishprime on this one.... the less stressed you keep him and the more food you give him, he should do just fine. I don't think it's worth the major treatments unless it is widespread or running rampant in your tank inhabitants.

BUT I DONT HAVE MUCH PERSONAL EXP IN THIS, ITS JUST READING AND HEARSAY... BUT AGAIN I DID ONLY THIS WHEN MY TANG GOT IT AND HE HAS BEEN GREAT EVER SINCE AND IT CLEARED RIGHT UP.

Well, came home from work today to total carnage. ugh. The blue tang (surprisingly enough)
is the only survivor. Not sure for how much longer though. Looks pretty rough. Will certainly
be QTing any future purchases from now on.
Tank will be fallow for 4-5 weeks now.

 thanks all

What exactly is going on, can you advise as to behavior or physical changes in your fish?

Your tank's parameters(temp,ph,salinity,ammonia,trites,trates)?

When did it start happening(any additions added to the tank right before this time)?

Hopefully we can try to figure something out with that info

So just out of curiosity why do you guys think that it could be more than ich?

I have no major first hand experience or long term experience with ICH but from what I have read and observed, It appears to be a somewhat slow but steady progressing disease. The most common symptoms would be the white spots and "itching", loss of apetite, and respiratory distress(he mentioned none of these aside from the spots) not that it takes all of them to display to assume ich. BUT they only mentioned one fish with one of these symptoms(and that species of fish has a reputation with this disease). Alongside that ICH is very common and can be generally suppressed with a normal immune system, which leads me to believe the fish started displaying the systems of ICH only once whatever else was in the tank suppressed it's immune system first. ICH can be considered a fast killer compared to other marine diseases BUT normal life cycles are 4 days to several weeks on average, He posted a problem 2 days before the inhabitants perished(not saying he just didn't notice it earlier).

MY thoughts are that ICH might have played apart, but I don't believe IMHO that ich would have wiped that whole tank as quickly as it did single handily due to the above reasoning.

Really sorry for the loss refer.

Just out of curiosity,
what did the QT tank consist of?
what type of tank, equipment, what kind of water did you fill it with, any lights?
how many fish occupied this tank and what was their duration in the QT?
Any ideas on temp?
