Too much powerhead?
« on: August 13, 2009, 21:48:34 »
For this new tank I bought an AquaClear 70 thinking it would do a better job than my small ones of moving water through the rock and stuff.

Geez.  First, one of my chromis got sucked up sideways into it like the second day we had the tank going.  So I glued a small pc. of plastic screening over it (that stuff you get at craftstores for needlepoint, nice big grid) and today I find one of my turbos has gotten his foot sucked up through the grid and is hanging there dead.  I had to pull the grid off to get the snail off.

Now the intake is wide open again (with the cone that comes with the PH) and I'm wondering what will be next.

I never had this happen before but I never had a beefy PH like this either.  Don't people use strong powerheads routinely in tanks these days?  How do you keep the livestock out of them?

I use korllia and seio pumps they spread out the flow as well as the intake force around the entire pump.

I thought about getting a couple of those.  They are new on the market since I got out of my last serious reef tank.  The only thing I didn't like is they look so obvious but then so does this big old honkin' AC70

They also attach to the tank with magnets, don't they?  I might rethink it and get a couple.

Never too much powerhead!  Its kind of rare that you got two stuck in in such a short time. i used to used Maxi Jet 1200's exclusively, and now i use Hydor Koralia's. Their the best power head for the money and give a nice even flow vs. a jet like stream. ive never gotten anything stuck in them and snails climb all over them. You may want to look into adding a couple of them to your tank, maybe a couple number 3's or 4's.

Once you get that sump going, you won't have to worry about this anymore. Use Koralias.

Yeah, right now, Koralia's are one of the few things in the hobby that you can pay little for and get something decent.  They're not perfect, but they're my favorite without jumping to the big boys.

I agree completely. I have 2 korllia in my 26g bow front. Moves the water fantastically.

I'm sold!  I am planning a road trip to Justin's shop here in a few minutes.  If he has them, I'll get them.

I agree the Koralia's are a great water mover for the price. I have two 4's in my 55g and  1 four and 1 three in my 33g. Wish I would have went with another four instead of the three in the 33g. Plan on upgrading as the corals get thicker to the fives or six's.

I got one to start with, may add another one later on.  Tomorrow is sump setup day!

I met Justin today and we had a nice chat.  Bought some nice corals, too.  Good deals right now  ;D
